Molly Smith strikes out seven for fourth shutout of season
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Behind a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Molly Smith, and timely hitting and baserunning from the Tigers, Memphis squeaked out a 1-0 win over the East Carolina Pirates on Friday evening.
Smith scattered two hits and walked three, as she improved to 7-8 on the season. Her shutout total has her seventh in school history over a career in the category, while lowering her ERA to 2.40 for the season.
Memphis (19-19, 3-1 American Athletic Conference) did not get its first baserunner until the fifth inning on a one-out walk to Lindsay Crowdus.
During that same span, East Carolina (18-23, 0-7 AAC) threatened to score in each of the first three innings. In the opening frame, ECU got back-to-back walks to open the inning; however, back-to-back field's choices to the pitcher and a strikeout ended the threat.
An inning later it was a fielding error and a bunt that saw runners on first and second base, but it was two straight looking strikeouts and a fly-out that kept the Pirates on the board. An inning later ECU reached on a fielding error and a double that put runners on second and third with two outs, but two consecutive pop-outs kept the hosts off of the scoreboard.
Memphis got its chance to threaten with two runners on base in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of walks, but could not advance a runner past second base in the scoreless inning.
In the top of the seventh Lindsey Stickrod singled through the right side of the infield for the team's first hit of the game. A sacrifice bunt from Crowdus moved Stickrod to second before she was lifted for pinch runner Breana Valenzuela. Valenzuela was moved to third base on a wild pitch, before Regan Hadley drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners.
Brooke Lee followed by hitting a sharp ground ball up the middle that the ECU shortstop could not handle, but was able to reach a foot on second for the force-out; however, the play allowed Valenzuela to score and giving the visitors a slim 1-0 lead.
After threatening for the first three innings, Smith held the Pirates in check for the next three, retiring 12 straight batters until the bottom of the second when ECU drew a one-out walk. The runner would not advance, with back-to-back outfield fly-outs closing the door on the shutout for the Tigers.
The teams return to action on Saturday, April 9, in a 1 p.m. (CT) first-pitch at the ECU Softball Stadium.
