Memphis steals five bases in loss
CONWAY, Ark. – Lindsay Crowdus went 2-for-3 with a school-record-tying three stolen bases, as Memphis swiped five bases in all in a 6-3 loss at Central Arkansas on Tuesday afternoon.
Kyler Trosclair stole two bases for the Tigers, giving her 18 on the season, one off of the school record of 19 held by three players, including current Memphis outfielder Hannah Harrell.
Memphis had seven hits in the game, as in addition to Crowdus' two hits, Trosclair, Brittany Seale, Lindsey Stickrod, Brooke Lee, and Regan Hadley each had one hit in the loss.
The teams played to a pair of scoreless innings, and the game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Crowdus opened the inning with a single, stole second base, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Trosclair, and scored when the first baseman missed the catch. Trosclair followed by stealing second base, but was left stranded after a foul-out, a ground out, and a strikeout.
The Bears countered in the bottom half of the third inning with a one-out double that was followed by a two-run home run to left field, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Central Arkansas came back in the bottom of the fourth and record two two-run hits on a bases-loaded double and a two-run single to put the Bears ahead 6-2.
Memphis got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning when Crowdus opened the frame with an infield single, stole second base, and advanced to third on an infield single from Trosclair. With runners on the corners, the pair successfully completed a double-steal of second (Trosclair) and home (Crowdus). Stickrod hit a two-out single to right field, scoring Trosclair, and closing the gap to three at 6-3.
The two runs in the fifth inning were the final runs of the game, as the Tigers were sat down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, giving the game its 6-3 final score.
Jessie Taylor went 3-for-4 for the Bears with four RBI's, as Sarah Bigej had two runs scored.
Molly Smith picked up the loss, falling to 6-8 on the season allowing three earned runs over three and one-thirds inning of work, striking out three and walking three while giving up six hits. Katie Brignac pitched the final two and two-thirds of an inning, allowing just three hits and no runs.
The Tigers travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to face off against the East Carolina Pirates in a three-game American Athletic Conference series starting on Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m. CT.
