Extra-base hits do in the Tigers in loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – USF scored three runs, all on extra-base hits, as the visiting Bulls topped Memphis 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
Brittany Seale was 2-for-3 for the Tigers, while also throwing out two Bulls at second base on steal attempts. Hannah Harrell and Brooke Lee also singled for Memphis, which had four hits in the game.
Starting pitcher Christian Irvin was strong in the circle, lasting 6.1 innings and scattered seven hits and three runs, while striking out four batters.
The teams meet for the third and final time during the regular season on Sunday morning, in an 11 a.m. first pitch at Tigers Softball Complex.
Memphis (22-22, 4-4 AAC) got the first baserunner of the game when Harrell drew a first-inning, one-out walk, but was left stranded.
USF (38-10, 10-1 AAC) got on the board first in the game in the third inning when Kristen Wyckoff hit a sharp double down the right field line, scoring Cassidy Boyle for what would eventually be the game-winning run.
An inning later Lee Ann Spivey hit a solo home run to center field to stretch USF's lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth the Tigers put together its strongest inning of the day, as the team had three hits in all. Harrell opened the inning with a single up the middle; however, was erased on a pop-up double play. Lee and Seale answered with back-to-back singles; however, a looking strikeout ended the threat in the frame.
The Bulls tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with Spivey's second solo home run, stretching the advantage to 3-0.
Memphis got a one-out single from Seale, but nothing else, as USF held on for a 3-0 AAC victory.
Two players – Spivey and Lauren Evans – had two hits each for the Bulls, as Spivey had two runs and two RBI's. Starting pitcher Erica Nunn went the entire seven innings, striking out 11 while walking just one, and scattered four hits in her fifth complete-game shutout of the year.
