USF Takes Series from Tigers After 7-0 Series Finale
Apr 17, 2016 | Softball
Memphis is held without a run in the series
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two big innings from South Florida - four runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh – provided all of the scoring in the game, as the Memphis Tigers were shut out for the third straight contest, falling 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Regan Hadley went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Tigers, while Lindsay Crowdus went 1-for-3.
USF (39-10, 11-1 American Athletic Conference), which is ranked 22nd in the country, got the first hit of the game with an infield single in the top of the first; however, Memphis catcher Brittany Seale tossed out her third consecutive Bulls' baserunner of the series, as USF was retired in order.
Memphis (22-23, 4-5 AAC) threatened in the bottom of the first inning when Lindsey Stickrod reached on an inning-opening walk, was advanced on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt off the bat of Brooke Lee. She advanced to third a batter later on an infield single by Hadley, putting runners on the corners; but a swinging strikeout kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in what would be their best attempt at scoring in the game.
The Bulls strung together a series of hits in the top of the fourth inning, using four hits to score four runs before Seale threw out her fourth and final baserunner of the series to keep USF to just four runs in the frame.
Hadley singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, and advanced to second on a groundout by Kyler Trosclair, but a pop-up to the pitcher ended the threat with Hadley in scoring position.
In the top of the seventh USF got RBI doubles from Juli Weber and Lee Ann Spivey, before Amber Atkinson knocked an RBI single for the game's seventh and final run.
Novak fell to 2-4 on the season as she pitched the first three and one-third of an inning, giving up three hits and four runs, walking three and striking out two. Calli Irvin pitched three and a third inning in relief, giving up eight hits and allowing three runs. Opening-game starter Molly Smith came in and struck out the only batter she faced in the game.
USF had 11 hits in the game, who each from Weber, Lauren Evans, and Atkinson, as Susan Wysocki picked up the win to improve to 11-3 on the year, pitching five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking a pair.
Memphis returns to action on Tuesday, April 19, when the team travels to Oxford, Mississippi, to face off against the Ole Miss Rebels in a 6 p.m. first pitch.
