Tigers Fall 5-3 at Ole Miss
Apr 19, 2016 | Softball
Tigers hit season-high-tying three doubles in losing effort
OXFORD, Miss. – A two-run double from Lindsay Crowdus tied Memphis and Ole Miss at two runs apiece halfway through the fifth inning; however, a 3-1 finish for the Rebels sent the Tigers to the 5-3 loss in their final non-conference road game of the 2016 season.
Tyler Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while four others: Crowdus, Hannah Harrell, Brittany Seale, and Lindsey Stickrod had one hit in the game. Crowdus drove in two and Johnson one, as the Tigers had a season-high-tying three doubles in the contest.
Calli Irvin started the game for Memphis, and was pulled a batter in, while Christian Novak picked up the loss in relief, lasting 4.2 innings while striking out four and walking two. Molly Smith pitched an inning and a third in relief, striking out two.
Ole Miss (31-15) struck first when leadoff hitter Elantra Cox walked, stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After another walk, the Rebels successfully converted a double-steal, with Cox taking home, and pushing the hosts to a 1-0 lead. The Tigers avoided further damage in the inning with a throw out at the plate from left fielder Hannah Harrell.
Memphis (22-24) put a runner in scoring position in the second inning with a Stickrod single and sacrifice bunt, but a subsequent strikeout and groundout ended the threat.
The hosts doubled their lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning, pushing the Rebel advantage to 2-0.
Johnson opened the fifth inning with a double and was followed by Regan Hadley, who walked. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Kyler Trosclair moved the runners ahead a base. After a strikeout, Crowdus doubled to center field on the first pitch she saw in the at-bat, scoring the aforementioned pair, tying the score at two runs apiece.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Ole Miss used a three-run home run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to give the Rebels their final run total of five.
The Tigers cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth inning when Seale led off the frame with a double, before being lifted for pinch-runner Breana Valenzuela. After a pair of groundouts, Johnson singled to left field chasing home Valenzuela.
The Rebels threatened in the bottom of the sixth; however, Smith struck out the final out, and a 1-2-3 top of the seventh ended the game.
Grayce Majam went 2-for-2, and was the only Ole Miss player with multiple hits in the game.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, April 22, when the team travels to Orlando, Florida, to take on the UCF Knights in a three-game American Athletic Conference series.
