Tiger Comeback Falls Just Short in Loss at UCF
Apr 22, 2016 | Softball
Three Tigers have multiple hits in narrow loss
ORLANDO – Memphis scored once in both the sixth and seventh innings; however, the Tigers were unable to overcome their 4-0 deficit to American Athletic Conference co-leader UCF on Friday evening in the first game of a three-game series.
Three Memphis players: Lindsay Crowdus, Hannah Harrell, and Tyler Johnson, each had two hits in the game, while Kyler Trosclair added the team's seventh hit. Crowdus and Jessie Lamb score the teams' runs, while Brittany Seale and Brooke Lee each picked up an RBI – neither coming on a base hit.
Molly Smith picked up the loss, falling to 9-11 on the year, striking out three batters in four innings of work, giving up five hits and three runs – all earned. Calli Irvin pitched two innings in relief, striking out one and allowing two hits and a run.
Memphis (22-25, 4-6 AAC) threatened early, as Harrell hit a one-out single in the first inning and stole second base; however, was stuck on second in the scoreless first inning. In the second inning, singles by Tyler Johnson and Kyler Trosclair put runners on first and second; however, for the second straight frame, a runner was left stranded at second base.
UCF (30-15, 7-1 AAC) – which is tied in the loss column for first in the AAC with South Florida who is 12-1 – struck first in the game in the bottom of the second inning when Samantha McCloskey hit a two-run home run, scoring herself and pinch runner Megan Greenwell, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
The hosts struck twice in the fourth inning on an RBI infield single and a wild pitch, pushing ahead to a 2-0 advantage.
Memphis had two consecutive 1-2-3 innings at the plate, but broke open in the top of the sixth inning, when Crowdus opened the frame with a bunt single. An infield single from Harrell pushed Crowdus to second, before Seale drew a walk to load the bases.
After a pop-up to left field, Lee reached on a fielder's choice that scored Crowdus and closed the door on the shutout attempts. A batter later Johnson singled through the left side of the infield to re-load the bases; however, an infield pop-up ended the inning with the bases full.
After UCF managed just an infield single in the bottom of the sixth, the game was halted for just over an hour due to rain and lightning, and when play resumed, the Tigers showed extreme patience. After a groundout to open the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Addison Maxwell was hit by a pitch to put a runner on first base.
Crowdus and Harrell each drew 3-1 walks in the next two plate appearances to load the bases for the third time over the previous two innings. Seale then drew a full count before fouling off two pitches, and on the eighth pitch drew the team's third consecutive walk, scoring Jessie Lamb who had re-entered after Maxwell reached base.
The Tigers were unable to do further damage, as an infield pop-up to UCF pitcher Shelby Turnier and a sharp fly-out to center field ended the threat and secured the win for the Knights.
Two Knight batters – Kalyn Cenal and Willow Kalinen had two hits, as Turnier struck out five over the seven innings, walking four and allowing two runs.
The Tigers and Knights return to action for the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. (CT) first pitch.
