Memphis to play three matches over three days over the weekend.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team will do a Texas swing this weekend, playing three matches in three days, including a conference-opening match at SMU, Saturday. Memphis will open the three-day trip at #73 ranked North Texas, Friday, at 3 p.m., then will play its first conference match of the season at SMU, Saturday, at noon. The trip will wrap up Sunday, at #48 ranked Texas-Arlington at 11 a.m.
Memphis has been short-handed of late, losing both Anki Wind and Tara McElroy to injury. That means the five-player roster starts each match down 1-0 with no number six singles entry, but that didn't prevent Memphis from almost upending Middle Tennessee last Sunday, falling 4-3. The Tigers got singles wins at one, three and five singles to almost complete the comeback from 2-0 down after the doubles point. Hanna Sohn picked up two wins last week at one singles and will look to spark her teammates by stretching her two-match winning streak. Marta Morga and Gabrielle Paul also won in their last outing against Middle Tennessee. Morga is looking to even her record at three singles, where she is now 3-5 following the straight set win Sunday.
With two of the three opponents on the slate currently in the ITA Top 75 rankings, Memphis will be playing their seventh and eighth ranked opponents of the 15 match old season.
The Tigers close their 2016 regular season next weekend at UAB and Tulane before returning home to host the American Athletic Conference women's tennis championships, Apr. 20-23rd. All matches, if weather allows the tournament to stay outdoors, will be played at MUS on the 12 outdoor courts there. If matches are forced inside, the four indoor courts at MUS and the four stadium courts at The Racquet Club of Memphis will be used.
