Sohn wins third straight match at one singles.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's tennis team got a third straight win from Hanna Sohn at number one singles and a second straight win from Marta Morga at number three, but could not pull off the win in a 4-2 loss at #73 North Texas (8-8), Friday.
Memphis, which played short-handed with just five healthy players for a third straight match, again started down 2-0 after the doubles point when North Texas grabbed a 6-2 win at number one doubles. With no Memphis doubles entry at three, the win at one gave North Texas a 2-0 lead as Memphis also had to forfeit at six singles.
UNT made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at five singles before Sohn got the Tigers on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at one singles. The win at one pushes her mark to 4-6 on the year at one singles and to 10-10 overall.
Memphis (1-13) pulled within a point of the home team when Morga grabbed her 6-2, 6-4 win at three singles, but the match at two proved to be the deciding point. Nastya Shestakova and Memphis' Kathryn Hughes went to 7-5 in the first set and Shestakova withstood another second set battle with Hughes, winning 6-4.
Freshman Janina Berres had won her first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (4), but trailed 4-3 in the second when the match was abandoned with the result clinched.
Memphis will step back in to league play, Saturday, playing at SMU at noon. The Tigers will wrap up the Texas swing with a road match at #48 UT Arlington, Sunday, at 11 a.m.
