Hughes and Berres pick up conference wins.
MEMPHIS – Senior Kathryn Hughes and freshman Janina Berres added conference wins to their season stats, but short-handed Memphis fell 5-2 at SMU (10-8), Saturday.
Memphis, already short-handed a player at six singles with the injury to Tara McElroy, also pulled Gabrielle Paul from the singles lineup, forfeiting the matches at both five and six. That meant that before Memphis even got singles started, they trailed 3-0 in the match after SMU grabbed a 6-3 win at one doubles to take that point in the match. Hristina Dishkova then added a 6-0, 6-2 win at one singles to seal the match.
Hughes was able to finish her match at two, picking up the 6-2, 6-2 win, and teammate Marta Morga, who was down a set and tied at 3-all in the second, won her second set, 6-4, and that match went to a super tiebreak. SMU won the breaker, 10-5, for the win there, but Berres battled to a 6-3, 7-5 victory at number four to get Memphis a second point of the day.
"I'm loving the fight from the girls," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "It's great to see everyone so determined. As we near the end of the season, I am proud of how the team is playing through adversity."
