MEMPHIS – The No. 33 ranked University of Memphis men's tennis team (12-8, 2-1 American) swept a pair of matches on Saturday, including a 7-0 win over conference foe Temple.
"Any time you're playing a conference match, your guys get a little extra pumped up," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "Temple came all the way here, and we knew they would be ready to go. They played a really good doubles point and, as a lot of doubles point goes this year, in the new scoring format, anything can happen. We came out with some good energy and played well and it was nice to get the win and get some momentum for singles."
Memphis built the lead with wins at one and two singles, then swept all six singles matches, including a super tiebreak for junior Louis Asser at number six, for the 7-0 win.
"We came out very focused in singles, that's something we've been working on, is getting a good start in our singles matches," Goebel said. "I think it's hard when you're in your first year, just realizing how important every point is. It's a learning process, but our guys have been open about it and they are really improving in that area."
In the afternoon match, Memphis again won the doubles point, sealing the point with wins at two and three, then swept all six matches, again using a super tiebreak for a win, this one for Kai Lemke, in a 7-0 win.
Over the last two days, Memphis has gone 3-1 in matches at home and now is back on the road for a pair of tough matches next week in Murfreesboro at Middle Tennessee.
"We have two tough matches next week – MTSU and VCU," Goebel said. "We played them both last year and they were very, very hard-fought matches and we're expecting the same this year."
Memphis will face host Middle Tennessee, Friday, at 2 p.m., then stays in town to face VCU in a neutral site match Saturday, at noon.
The Tigers return home for their final regular season home match on Apr. 17th, when they host #17 ranked USF in American Athletic Conference play.
