Tigers Drop 6-0 Game to Huskies
Mar 25, 2016 | Softball
Teams to meet on Saturday for the series win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Regan Hadley and Tyler Johnson each went 2-for-3 at the plate; however, the Tigers could not push a run onto the scoreboard – the first shutout against Memphis this season – as the hosts fell to the UConn Huskies by a 6-0 final score on Friday afternoon.
After Memphis' win on Thursday, and UConn's win today, the American Athletic Conference series win comes down to the Saturday (March 26) afternoon contest, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Memphis (17-17, 1-1 AAC) saw its leadoff hitter reach base in five of seven innings; but it was strong defense – UConn had two double plays in the game – that kept the Tigers from scoring.
UConn (11-19, 1-1 AAC) manufactured a run in the top of the first inning when Lexi Gifford hit a two-out single, stole second base, and scored on a double to right field, for the eventual game-winning run. The Huskies drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hannah Harrell opened the inning with a walk, advanced to second on her school-record-tying 19th stolen base of the season, and to third on a Johnson single up the middle. Addison Maxwell hit a sharp ground ball to the Huskie shortstop who threw out Harrell at the plate, before a double play – the team's second of the game – ended the threat.
Behind relief pitcher Calli Irvin, the Huskies were held off of the scoreboard in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The three-inning scoreless streak ended in the sixth inning when after a groundout and strikeout, UConn strung together a double, hit by pitch, and a walk to load the bases, before Gifford emptied the bases with a double to right field, and scored a batter later, giving UConn its four runs.
Christian Novak – in her third game back from back surgery – picked up the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season, as she lasted an inning and a third, where she gave up four hits and two earned runs. Irvin pitched the final five and two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and giving up four runs and five hits.
UConn's Kayla Doty improved to 3-1 on the season as she scattered five hits and walked just one. Alyson Ambler went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, while Gifford was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI's.
