Memphis hosts UConn in three games over the weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers open the 2016 American Athletic Conference season on Thursday, March 24, when the squad hosts the UConn Huskies in the first game a three-game series at the Tigers Softball Complex.

Memphis, which does not have a senior on its 2016 roster, is led by a quartet of players - two sophomores and two juniors - who each hit over .315 this season. Juniors Brittany Seale (.359) and Lindsey Stickrod (.310) along with sophomores Brooke Lee (.361) and Kyler Trosclair (.320)Â rank in the top four in the team in batting average. Lee stands fifth in the league in batting average, and Seale sixth.

Memphis sophomore pitcher Molly Smith was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her performances during the week ending March 20. Smith pitched 7 and one-third of an inning, striking out eight while giving up just four hits and two walks. The highlight of the week came in the series finale against Northern Kentucky, where she struck out eight batters in her second complete game shutout of the season, helping the Tigers to the 7-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. This season the Yamhill, Oregon, native leads the team with a 3.00 ERA to go with a 4-6 overall record with a team-high 52 strikeouts in 70 innings of work. She joins Regan Hadley, Brittany Seale, and Lindsey Stickrod as Tigers who have been named to the Honor Roll.

Memphis junior outfielder Lindsay Crowdus, during her two-plus seasons with the Tigers, has a career batting average of .325, which is the highest in school history, while teammate Kyler Trosclair stands third all-time in batting average.

Memphis and Ole Miss have met just three times prior - two of those meetings coming last season. The first time the teams met was on February 12, 2006, an 11-0 Tiger win and the second overall win in program history.

In this, Memphis' 11th season as a program, the Tigers have played in a conference in every year of existence. The first eight seasons as a member of Conference USA, and this is the program's third season in the American Athletic Conference. It is just the second time in the 11th seasons that the Tigers have hosted its Conference opener.

Memphis' home opening win was also head coach Natalie Poole's 400th career win. She is 98-121 at Memphis heading in to the Chanticleer Classic.

When Christian Novak went to the mound on March 19 against Cleveland State, it was the first time in over a year that the Nevada, Missouri, native had pitched in a game. Against the Vikings she struck out eight in picking up the win. The year gap came because of a back injury which saw her appear on the national television show "The Doctors". After surgery completed by renowned surgeon Dr. Hoorman Melamed, she took the following year to rehab and to strenghthen her core, before returning to softball on March 19.

Memphis was picked to finish sixth in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. Memphis finished seventh in the league in 2015 with an 6-12 record.

Junior outfielder Hannah Harrell has 18 stolen bases this season, and 40 over her career, which puts her in second in a career in school history.

Additionally, her 18 stolen bases this season rank third in the single-season record books, one away from tying the school record. Teammate Kyler Trosclair stands eighth in a season in school history with 15 this season.

As a team, Memphis' eight stolen bases against Buffalo on March 11, set a new school record, passing the previous record of seven set three different times.
