Brooke Lee drives in two, while Molly Smith strikes out 10 in the win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Brooke Lee drove home all of Memphis' runs with a two-run home run, while sophomore pitcher Molly Smith struck out 10 UConn batters, as the Tigers took the American Athletic Conference series over the Huskies with a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (18-17, 2-1 AAC) was led offensively by Lee, who drove in herself and Lindsey Stickrod with a third-inning home run. Stickrod went a perfect 3-for-3, raising her batting average on the season to .324. The team's other three hits came from three different batters – Lindsay Crowdus, Tyler Johnson, and Calli Irvin.
Smith, who shut out UConn in the series opener on Thursday, struck out a career-high 10 batters in the game, while not allowing an earned run for the fourth consecutive start. Over her last five starts she has given up just two earned runs, including two shutouts and at least eight strikeouts in four of those five contests.
UConn (11-20, 1-2 AAC) opened the first inning with two singles, but each of the singles was sandwiched between a Smith strikeout, and the Huskies did not have a runner reach third base through the first four innings of the contest.
After back-to-back scoreless innings to start the game for the Tigers, the hosts got some momentum in the third inning when Stickrod singled up the middle, which was followed by an opposite-field home run over the right field wall for Lee, her fifth longball of the season.
After four scoreless innings, and 11 total against Smith, the Huskies got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Alyssa Gardea hit a soft single to Smith in the pitcher's circle. Smith's throw sailed high of Stickrod at first base, and nestled into the right field corner, allowing the swift Gardea to turn her single into a little league home run on the three-base throwing error, and snapping the shot at a third consecutive shutout for Smith.
After the error, Smith did not allow another baserunner in the game, including getting an acrobatic catch by Lee at second base for the 21st and final out of the game, securing the 2-1 win.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when the squads hosts the Murray State Racers in the final game of an eight-game homestand, with the first pitch being slated for 4 p.m. at Tigers Softball Complex.
