Big Innings Take Down Tigers Against Murray State

Calli Irvin drives in all three Tiger runs in the loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers were unable to hold onto a two-run fourth inning advantage on Tuesday evening, as the Tigers fell 6-3, despite three RBI's off the bat of Calli Irvin.
Irvin, a junior, was 2-for-3 while freshman Tyler Johnson was also 2-for-3, scoring two runs. Kyler Trosclair, Lindsay Crowdus, and Addison Maxwell were each 1-for-3, while Lindsey Stickrod scored the team's other run.
In the bottom of the first inning Crowdus hit a one-out infield single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout; however, a third groundout ended the threat for the Tigers.
Murray State threatened in the third inning with a one-out single and a walk, before a strikeout put a second out on the board. A wild pitch advanced both runners a base, before Memphis third baseman Johnson made a strong defensive play and throw to end the inning.
The Racers put two runners on in the top of the fourth inning with a single and walk to open the inning, before the runners were pushed ahead a base with a sacrifice bunt. Smith forced a pop-up and a strikeout to keep the Racers off of the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.
Memphis was able to snap the scoreless streak in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Tigers loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, a single, and a walk, before Irvin singled to left field, chasing home Stickrod and Johnson, putting the Tigers ahead 2-0 through four frames.
Murray State answered with four runs in the top of the fifth, the last two coming on a two-run home run from Jocelyn Rodgers to push the visitors to a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning it looked as if the Tigers would knot the score at four runs apiece as Irvin hit a long fly ball to left field with Johnson on base; however, the ball bounced off the top of the wall – inches away from a home run - which gave Irvin a double while scoring Johnson.
The visitors added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with two runs scored, and all Memphis could get was a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, securing the Murray State victory.
Racer starter Mason Robinson went the distance in improving to 9-8 on the season as she struck out two over seven innings of work while walking three and giving up seven hits and three earned runs.
Molly Smith fell to 6-7 on the season as she gave up four runs (only one earned) over four and two-thirds of an inning, striking out six and walking four. Irvin came in and pitched the final two and one-third of an inning in relief, giving up three hits and two runs.
The Tigers return to action in a week on April 5 when the squad travels to face off against Central Arkansas in a 5 p.m. first pitch.
