Tigers Host Lions at 6:30 p.m. at FedExPark
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis will be looking to get back on the winning side when the Tigers host Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at FedExPark. The Tigers (5-10) have dropped five straight, including a three-game sweep by No. 12 Missouri State, and have won just one of the last nine games.
It has been a tough nine-game stretch for Memphis, playing four games against nationally ranked opponents, and spending eight consecutive days away from home at one point.
The Tigers have also faced some tough pitching staffs, with both Georgia Southern and Missouri State allowing less than four runs a game. The Tigers were batting .294 as a team and averaging 6.4 runs per game at the beginning of their tough road trip two weeks ago. The team is now hitting .245 and managing to score less than five runs per game.
Memphis' corner outfielders, Chris Carrier and Jake Little, are leading the team offensively with both batting over .300. Carrier has a team-high six doubles, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored. Little leads the team with three home runs and has eight RBI and 11 runs scored.
Team defense, which was one of the team strengths last season, has been a thorn in the side so far this season. The Tigers have are fielding .958 with 23 errors, while third baseman Zach Schritenthal already has seven after only committing nine errors all of last season.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff has had a tough start to the season and comes in with a 1-13 record. The Lions opened conference play last week at Texas Southern and the team picked up its first win despite dropping the series.
Jaqueese Moore is the team's offensive leader with a .386 batting average. The junior outfielder has 22 hits, eight RBI and 10 runs scored. Outfielder Jordan Knox is the Lions' leading run producer and run scorer with 11 RBI and 11 runs scored.
The Lions' pitching staff has compiled an 8.08 ERA and has struck out 108 batters while issuing 87 walks.
Memphis will remain at home this weekend to host Eastern Illinois for a three-game series at FedExPark. The Panthers are 1-14 to start the year and will play at Lipscomb Tuesday before coming to Memphis. Last season the Tigers swept a three game series over EIU at FedExPark.
