Tigers Bounce Back with 6-5 Win
Mar 15, 2016 | Baseball
Memphis rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat UAPB
The Tigers got great long relief outings from freshmen Jonathan Bowlan and Hunter Smith. Bowlan logged 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on one hit while Smith pitched 3 shutout innings to earn his first career win.
Trey McNickle, Drew Crosby and Nolan Blackwood combined to pitch the final two scoreless innings. Blackwood recorded his third save of the season and the 20th of his career.
UAPB opened the game with four runs on five singles and a Memphis error in the top of the first inning. Starter James Muse was tagged for all four of the runs and was removed from the game after getting just two outs. Jonathan Bowlan was called on out of the bullpen and got the Tigers out of the inning.
Memphis loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom of the first but couldn't manage to cut into the Pine Bluff lead.
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the third inning after Jake Little lost a ball in center field that fell in for a double. The run came home on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.
Memphis cut into the lead considerably in the fourth with four runs on three hits, including a big two-out, three-run triple by third baseman Zach Schritenthal. Second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek and shortstop Jake Overbey both singled to start the rally. Catcher Damo DeMatteo and right fielder Colton Neel both walked in the inning.
The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the fifth after left fielder Chris Carrier led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. Grudzielanek reached on an infield single to put two runners on base.
Carrier stole third base and was able to score on an infield single by first baseman Jacob Elliott.
Little singled with one out in the sixth, stole second base and went to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Carrier doubled for the second time in the game to drive in Little and give Memphis its first lead of the day, 6-5.
Memphis will host Eastern Illinois this weekend for a three-game series at FedExpark. The Tigers and Panthers will play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
