Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Six-Match Road Swing
Feb 28, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Lady Tigers fall at No. 50 ranked Columbia.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team put the final wraps on a six-match road swing that saw them face four ranked opponents on Sunday. Memphis (1-9) fell to No. 50 ranked Columbia and will now break until March 11th, when the Tigers host Iowa State.
The host Lions grabbed wins at two and three doubles to take an early lead. And with the doubles point decided, the Tiger team of Hanna Sohn and Janina Berres never got a chance to see if they could pick up a win against a ranked team, trailing 5-4 to the No. 57 ranked duo of Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev.
Memphis, which was already without junior all-conference honoree Anki Wind, then had to default at six when Tara McElroy was unable to play out her singles match. That put Columbia up 2-0 and the home team got a win from No. 48 ranked Kanika Vaidya at one and from Star Makarome at number three to seal the 4-0 win.
With the match decided, the other matches were abandoned, including Kathryn Hughes' match at two, where she had won the first set tie break 7-6 and Gabrielle Paul's match at five, where she was up 6-4, 3-1.
Memphis gets a lot of time in between in next matches. The Lady Tigers host Iowa State on Mar. 11th, then host VCU on Mar. 25th.
