Tigers taking Hayden Perez back to Lincoln.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's tennis team (1-5) is taking head coach Hayden Perez back to the University of Nebraska for a pair of matches, starting with a neutral site match against Miami (Ohio), Saturday. Perez served as an assistant coach at Nebraska for eight seasons, helping the Cornhuskers to a Big 10 conference championship in 2013 and coaching nine different players to all-conference honors, including former Memphis volunteer assistant coach Mary Weatherholt. Perez earned three Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Assistant Coach of the Year honors while on the staff at Nebraska (2007, 2010, 2012).
It's been a long road trip for the Tigers. With the ATP 250 Memphis Open taking over The Racquet Club of Memphis the past two weeks, the team stayed on the road following two matches at UC-Santa Barbara and ventured to Nebraska on Tuesday.
Before Perez takes the court against his former team, the Tigers will face the RedHawks of Miami (Ohio) (2-3), Saturday, at 11 a.m. Memphis has faced a couple of the RedHawks already this season, as both teams were at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Sophomore Hanna Sohn, who has moved to one singles with the injury to Anki Wind, defeated freshman Emily Struble, 6-2, 6-3.
This is the first-ever meeting between Memphis and Miami.
This will also be the first-ever meeting between Memphis and Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are 7-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming to No. 32 ranked Wichita State. Live scoring will be available for the Nebraska match at http://www.huskers.com/fls/100/16WTennis/xlive.htm. The two teams will play in the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center at 11:30 a.m., Sunday.
The two matches away from Memphis are part of the longest stretch of the year, six matches, for Memphis away from the Bluff City. Next weekend, the team wings to New York City to play a pair of non-conference matches at Columbia University.
