Memphis facing UCSB and Washington State, Saturday.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (1-3) is in California and will face a pair of ranked opponents in non-conference play on Saturday. Memphis will face host UC Santa Barbara (0-3), currently No. 60 in the country, at 9:00 a.m. (PT), Saturday, then will face No. 74 Washington State at 1:00 that same afternoon.
UCSB is currently 0-3 on the season, but has lost three straight matches, 4-3, to No. 2 USC, against No. 38 Oklahoma and against No. 51 Utah. Washington State is currently unbeaten at 8-0 and is playing their first road matches outside of Pullman.
Memphis is on the road without the services of junior Anki Wind. Wind, who has played one singles and doubles for Memphis earlier this year, has missed two straight matches due to injury, forcing the remainder of the Memphis lineup to slide up a spot.
"You find out a lot about your team and yourself through adversity," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "We talked about how having Anki out for a little bit is going to provide some adversity and how we respond to that is important. They're all going to grow as tennis players. The effort is going to be there and we're going to get better and if Anki does return, we'll be stronger as a team when she is back."
Without Wind, sophomore Hanna Sohn slid up to the top singles spot in Memphis' last match, a 6-1 loss to No. 47 Purdue. But Sohn scored the lone point of the match for Memphis, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to improve to 2-1 in dual season play in singles. She also teamed with freshman Janina Berres at one doubles, a first-time pairing on the year for the Tigers.
"February is probably the toughest stretch on our schedule," Perez said. "We play eight matches – two every weekend. It's not a great time to have Anki missing, but we're all going to grow and get better from this."
