Lady Tigers fall to second ranked opponent on the season.
MEMPHIS – The Memphis women's tennis team (1-4) winged its way west to face their second ranked opponent of the season, going to play at No. 60 ranked UC Santa Barbara, Saturday. Memphis fell 4-0 to the Gauchos. Memphis then faced No. 74 ranked Washington State, falling 4-0.
"I'm proud of the girls," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "Against Washington State, we were in the third set in two mtaaches and were very competitive in two others. We were gaining momentum late in the singles and fighting very hard. In our second outdoor match this year (the UCSB match was the first), there was improvement from everyone between our morning match and the aftrnoon. The effort given by this group was second to none. We are looking forward to gtting to Nebraska next week and competing for each other again."
The morning had a delay to start, as the courts were wet and needed a two-hour delay to be made playable.
UCSB took a 1-0 lead with a pair of wins at one and three doubles. Playing just their second doubles match together at number one the team of Hanna Sohn and Janina Berres stepped on to the courts against the No. 10 ranked doubles team in the country, but could not break through for the win.
The home team then posted wins at two, five, then four singles to seal the win. With the match decided, Sohn's comeback at number one was not completed. After dropping the first set 6-1, the sophomore had just won the second set, 6-2, to force a third set.
In the afternoon match, Sohn had again split sets, coming back from a 6-3 first set loss to win the second set, 6-3. Marta Morga, on her birthday, also was in a third set. She had won her first set, 6-1, and lost the second, 4-6, and was up 3-2 when Washington State closed out the match with wins at two, four and five singles.
Memphis will stay on the road, playing a pair of matches at Nebraska next week with the ATP 250 Memphis Open utilizing the Tigers' courts. Memphis will face Nebraska and Miami (Ohio) next week.
