UCF Completes Series Sweep of Tigers
Apr 18, 2015 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis battled UCF throughout the day but the Knights pulled away in the seventh to complete the series sweep with a 6-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
The Tigers finish the series with a 14-27 record, 2-10 in the American Athletic Conference. With the win, Central Florida (43-6, 14-1 AAC) clinched at least a share of the regular season conference title.
Heading into the final inning, the Tigers trailed by two runs, just as they did in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. The Knights scored three runs in that game, and they did the same in the seventh inning of Saturday's as well, on the strength of a two-run home run from Jessica Ujvari, her second of the weekend.
Jordan Richwood (7-15) pitched her 12th complete game of the season in the loss. She gave up seven hits and six runs while striking out a batter. Mackenzie Audas was in the circle for the Knights and picked up her 20th win of the season. She gave up one run and six hits while striking out eight batters.
For the third game in a row, the Knights struck in the first inning. Linnea Goodman got a leadoff single and advanced to second on a passed ball. She was bunted over to third, and then took home as part of a double steal to give UCF a 1-0 lead.
Memphis didn't get its first hit against Audas until the seventh inning in Friday's game, but it only took until the second when Katie Brignac singled off of her with one-out. She was stranded at first base. Brignac finished 1-3 in the game with a pair of strikeouts.
Farrah Sullivan scored the second run for UCF as she leadoff the third inning with a walk. She was singled over to second and then stole third before a sacrifice fly brought her in to make it 2-0.
Richwood set down six batters in a row before a two-out single that just fell out of the tip of a diving Linday Crowdus' glove in the top of the fifth kept the inning alive. Brittany Solis had the hit and she stole second before Ujvari singled her in. Solis was the first of three RBI from Ujvari, who finished 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.
The Tigers tried to start a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles from Wheeler Hill and Addison Maxwell, but they were both stranded.
Hannah Harrell led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. Harrell was 2-3 on the day, the only Tiger to have multiple hits. Crowdus followed with an infield single, and interference from the shortstop allowed Harrell to take third, putting runners on the corner.
That brought up Brittany Vaughn, who drove a pitch high and deep, but it just didn't have enough on it as Goodman made the catch near the warning track in left field. Harrell was able to come in to score and Crowdus moved on to second.
After a strikeout for out number two, Crowdus stole third to put herself 60 feet away from making it 3-2, but a ground out ended the Tiger threat and was the last real opportunity Memphis had as UCF would go on to score three the next inning.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday when they welcome Central Arkansas for a doubleheader at the Tiger Softball Complex. First pitch for game one is at 3 p.m. with the second game starting shortly after its conclusion. Memphis goes on the road the next day for a single game against Mississippi State starting at 6 p.m. before heading on to play USF in an AAC matchup over the weekend.
