Apr 21, 2015 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Tigers were swept in a doubleheader of games against Central Arkansas 8-0 in five innings and 5-3 at the Tiger Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.
The Tigers (14-29, 2-10 American Athletic Conference) were in both games, but a big fifth inning from the Bears (29-15, 14-4 Southland) helped them take game one, and then a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth won game two.
GAME ONE -- Memphis 0, Central Arkansas 8
The score line was not indicative of game on, as both teams were even until the top of the fifth inning, when UCA batted around and put up all eight runs.
Memphis actually outhit the Bears 4-3, but was unable to take advantage of having a runner on third in the second and third innings and the bases loaded in the fifth.
Jordan Richwood took the loss and moved to 7-16 on the season. She threw four and two-thirds innings and had four strikeouts and gave up only two hits. However, she also walked six batters, with all but one of them coming in the top of the fifth.
The Bears entered the fifth inning with no scores and only one hit. They managed to score eight hits in the top half of the inning with just two hits. Everything else came on walks, wild pitches and stolen bases.
The first three Bears reached on walks to leadoff the fifth. Then Richwood fought back to strike out the next two batters. She got within a strike of getting out of the inning before Briana Wisenhunt singled on a 2-2 pitch, scoring two runners to make it 2-0.
After another pair of walks made it 3-0, Katie Brignac came in to pitch in relief of Richwood. Her first pitch was wild and brought in the fourth run. After another walk re-loaded the bases, Audrey Pratt picked up the second hit of the inning with a two-RBI single, giving the Bears a six-run lead.
A wild pitch brought in the seventh run, and then a double steal made it 8-0 before the Tigers recorded the final out.
The first two Tigers went down in the fifth before Kyler Trosclair earned a walk. Then Hannah Harrell singled and Lindsay Crowdus took a 2-1 pitch off of the helmet to load the bases. That brought in Vaughn, who had led off the second with a double before being stranded at third. However, her shallow fly ball to center was caught by the second baseman, ending the game.
Kylee Studioso (23-9) picked up the win for Central Arkansas. She picked up her 25th complete game of the season and struck out four batters while giving up four hits and two walks.
GAME TWO -- Memphis 3, Central Arkansas 5
Central Arkansas took an early lead but the Tigers fought back to tie it up. However, runs in the fifth and sixth innings were enough for the Bears to pull out the win.
Molly Smith (3-6) took the loss for the Tigers as she threw a complete game. She gave up nine hits and five runs while striking out six and walking five.
Kayla Gomness grabbed the win to move to 2-0, but Shivaun Landeros threw the final three innings without giving up a hit and striking out two. Gomness gave up five hits and three runs while striking out two in her four innings of work.
Ashley Boswell led off the third inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a ground out, she scored on a single up the middle. Another double and then back-to-back walks made it 2-0. A third run came in when Smith hit a batter with the bases loaded.
Memphis responded quickly in the bottom of the third as Haleigh Ross hit a leadoff double in her first at bat of the day. A two-out infield single from Harrell made it 3-1. Then Crowdus laid down a bunt and beat out a throw to first from the pitcher, who proceeded to throw it down the right field line. Crowdus made it all the way to third and Harrell scored to make it 3-2.
Memphis tied it up in the fourth on the strength of multiple errors. Sami Jo Schulz reached on a two-out error and then after Ross walked, she moved to second. A throwing error from the pitcher moved Maxwell to third, and then the shortstop mishandled Trosclair's ground ball and the Tigers tied it up. Memphis had the bases loaded, but left all three runners stranded.
Central Arkansas grabbed the lead back with a one-out single and stolen base. After another walk, Ryan Holdiness singled through the left side to take the lead 4-3. UCA loaded the bases with one out, but then Smith battled back to get a popup out and a strike out.
A hit batsman with two outs in the sixth came back to haunt the Tigers as the next batter doubled in the runner to make it 5-3. Memphis then went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings as UCA completed the sweep.
Memphis has a quick turnaround as the Tigers head to Starkville, Miss. on Wednesday to play Mississippi State at 6 p.m. Follow the Tigers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @MemphisSoftball to stay up-to-date with news, scores and information about the team.
