MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Big innings and defensive miscues helped Wisconsin earn a 14-7 victory over the University of Memphis softball team on Saturday afternoon.
In day two of the College of Charleston Invitational, both teams battled in a close, low-scoring game through three innings until Wisconsin (13-12) broke it open with a five-run fourth.
The Badgers opened the game with a pair of runs on four hits in the first inning, but Memphis answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on four walks by Wisconsin starter Taylor-Paige Stewart. The inning marked the first of two times Memphis stranded the bases loaded.
Memphis (7-10) again attempted a comeback in the fifth inning with two runs, including a solo home run by Cierra Mangum. The Tigers trailed by four heading into the seventh inning when the Badgers put the game away with seven runs on eight hits and a couple of errors to take a 14-3 lead.
Calli Irvin hit a pinch hit grand slam for Memphis in the bottom of the inning, but Wisconsin held on to cut the rally short.
Irvin is only the fifth player in the program's 10-year history to hit a grand slam, a feat rarer than a no-hitter in the Tiger record books. It is the seventh grand slam in school history with the last by Amber Lindahl at Samford in 2012. Irvin leads the team with three home runs this season.
Jordan Richwood (5-6) started for Memphis and suffered the loss. She allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in four innings. Katie Brignac pitched the final three innings and also gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits.
Lindsay Crowdus extended her hitting streak to a career best nine games, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a RBI. Kyler Trosclair went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Mangum went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Anna Thomas extended her hitting streak to three games with a 2-for-3 outing.
Annie Davis (3-1) earned the victory in the circle for Wisconsin. Davis pitched the final four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Stewart started for the Badgers, and allowed one run on a hit in three innings with six walks.
Wisconsin had six players with multiple hits in the game and five with multiple runs. Chloe Miller went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Samantha Arents also went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Memphis next plays tournament host, the College of Charleston, later tonight. The game is scheduled for 7 pm CT (8 ET) at Patriots Point.
