Box Score
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Memphis began and ended strong offensively, but the Tigers could not overcome a five-run sixth by Furman in a 7-4 loss to end the College of Charleston Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis (7-12) took an early 2-0 lead to open the game on two hits, a couple of walks and an error, but stranded the bases load. From there, the Tigers struggled to push runs across the plate despite having runners in scoring position in all but the fifth inning. Memphis left 10 runners on base in the game.
Furman (14-7) slowly crept back into the game, scoring runs in the third and fourth innings to tie it at two. The Paladins then scored five runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.
The Tigers attempted a comeback down five runs in the top of the seventh. A single and a couple of errors loaded the bases with nobody out and Katie Brignac delivered a two-run single up the middle to pull Memphis within three. Following a hit by pitch to Anna Thomas, the Tigers again had the bases loaded with nobody out and the tying run on first. But an infield fly and a double play ended the threat and gave Furman the 7-4 win.
Brignac finished 2-for-4 in the game with her first career double and two RBI. Lindsay Crowdus extended her hitting streak to a career-high 11 games, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. The streak is tied for fourth in school history and three games away from the matching the record.
Brignac started the game and went two and two-third innings giving up a run on three hits. Jordan Richwood (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings of relief. Richwood struck out seven, including a big strikeout when she entered the game to end the third inning with the bases loaded.
Lindsey Bert (10-3) earned the victory for Furman in the circle. Bert allowed four runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Sieara Bishop had a RBI double, two walks and a hit by pitch for Furman. Anna Rose Borrelli hit a pinch hit two-run single in the sixth for the Paladin and Andrea Abbatiello added a two-run double in the inning.
Memphis returns home to host a doubleheader with Belmont on Tuesday at 3 pm CT at the Tiger Softball Complex. It will be the Tigers third attempt at a home opener with weather cancelling the previous two tries. Admission to all games at the Tiger Softball Complex is free.
