Tigers also have a second straight individual medalist.
KENNESAW, Ga. – The Memphis men's golf team captured its second championship of the fall and had a second different individual medalist this fall at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, Tuesday.
In the team competition, the Tigers withheld a charge from host Kennesaw State, matching Kennesaw with a third round 286 to close out their wire-to-wire win. After an opening round 286, Memphis carded a 284 in the second round, Monday, then was paired with their nearest competitors for the final round on Tuesday morning. The 856 total gave Memphis a four-stroke win over Kennesaw and a 21 stroke lead over No. 49 ranked Lipscomb.
"So proud of the boys today," Head Coach Blake Smart said. "Kennesaw State never let us out of their sight and we hung in there and finished it off. The greens were incredibly quick and provided a good challenge."
The tournament win is the second in three events for Memphis, who finished as the team runner-up last week at the Western Kentucky tournament.
Memphis junior Lars van Meijel captured his first collegiate individual medalist honor with a 211 (73-65-73), becoming the second different Tiger in as many tournaments to win his first collegiate crown. Van Meijel held on against defending tournament champion, Fredrik Nilehn of Kennesaw State for the one-stroke win with a 211.
"So happy that Lars is back in the winner's circle," Smart said. "He has worked really hard on his mental game and it's paying dividends."
Teammate Thomas Perrot, who won last week's tournament at Western Kentucky for his first college win, finished third just two strokes back at 213 (71-73-69). Teammate Sydney Chung gave Memphis a third finisher in the top 10, finishing tied for 9th with a 219 (73-72-74). Memphis' Eithel McGowen added a top 15 finishing, carding a 221 (69-82-70) for a tie for 14th overall. Chase Harris was the final team competitor in the field, finishing tied with teammate Kevin Lee for 31st overall with a 228. Harris carded a 75-74-79 to finish in the tie for 31st, while Lee, competing as an individual, scored a 74-75-79.
"It's very important for us to get back for a few days and get rested and refocused for next week. We did a good job of that last week," Smart said.
Memphis will stay busy this coming week, prepping for next week's Quail Valley Collegiate at Vero Beach, Florida. That will be Memphis' final tournament of the fall before breaking from college competition until the spring.
