Memphis Stands Eighth After First Day of Mason Rudolph Championship

Thomas Perrot leads Memphis and stands tied for 11th
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers put together rounds of 299 and 292 – a total of 591 – which puts the Blue and Gray in eighth place with 18 holes remaining in the tournament.
Memphis' 299 put the Tigers in ninth place, while the second round score moved the Tigers ahead a position into eighth, eight strokes out of fourth place.
Tournament host and ninth ranked Vanderbilt leads the field after the first day with a two-under 566, while 19th ranked Florida stands second with a 569 and 17th ranked Alabama is third with a 573.
In the opening round at the Vanderbilt Legends Club, which has a par of 71 and is 7,100-yards long, senior Thomas Perrot, who shot a two over par 73, led the team. He opened the day on the par-four fifth hole with a bogey, and then went two over par with a bogey on the par-four seventh hole.
He followed with a seven-hole stretch in which he recorded a birdie, par, par, birdie, birdie, par, and birdie to stand two strokes under par. He closed the round with five bogeys over the final eight holes to finish the morning session at two over par.
Sydney Chung, in his first event of the spring season, opened his day in a rough way, as he had bogeys over three of his first four holes; however, he answered back over the next eight holes with three birdies and five pars to put him at even par through 12 holes in the round.
A double-bogey on the par-four first hole put him at two over par, and he closed the round with a bogey, a birdie, and a bogey, to close the 18 holes with a three over par 74.
Taylor McCullum and Eithel McGowen each shot a five-over par 76 over the opening 18 holes of the tournament.
McCullum was consistent throughout the opening round, as he had a team-high 13 pars over the 18 holes, including in six of his last seven holes, carding five-over par 76.
McGowen opened strong, with five consecutive pars, before back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes, a bogey on the 16th hole, and a double-bogey on the par-five 17th hole. The junior quickly righted the ship, and recorded a birdie on the par-five 18th hole, and closed the round with four pars over the final five holes, to put himself at five over par in the first round.
Lars van Meijel, who leads the team in scoring average, was the team's fifth golfer in the opening round, as he shot a first-round 77. Opening on the par-four fourth hole, he started with three straight pars before he hit a rough patch where he shot six over par over the next six holes. Over the final nine holes he shot even par, as he answered a bogey with a birdie to finish six strokes over par.
In the second round, it was van Meijel and Perrot who led the team with an even-par 71, as McGowen and Chung each shot a four-over 75.
van Meijel had 14 pars over his second 18 holes, with two birdies (on the 10th and 18th holes) and two bogeys (second and ninth holes). Through the two rounds, he stands tied for 32nd and has a score of six over par.
Perrot opened his second round with five straight pars before alternating between birdies and bogeys, as he birdied the 10th hole and bogeyed the 11th, birdied the 14th and bogeyed the 16th, and birdied the 18th and bogeyed the first before closing with three straight pars.
McGowen opened his second round with a birdie on the par-five sixth hole, before bogeying the next two holes to put him one over. Four straight pars were answered by a birdie on the par three 13th hole, and the junior was at even par until the par five 18th hole where he recorded a double bogey. He bogeyed the second and fifth hole to give him the four-over 75.
Chung answered his opening-round 74 with a second-round 75, and opened with four straight pars before recording back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes. He countered with a birdie on the 14th hole, before sandwiching three bogeys among seven pars over the final 10 holes for the four-over 75.
McCullum started well in the second round with birdies on eight of the first 11 holes; however, struggled at the tail end of the round with four bogeys, a double bogey, and a triple bogey en route to a second-round 83.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, April 3, for the third and final round of the tournament.
