Volleyball Upended at Southern Miss, 3-1

Memphis won the opening set, but behind a match-high 23 kills from Ashley Mell, Southern Miss roared back to take the next three to defeat the Tigers 3-1 in C-USA action Friday night.
Memphis falls to 2-15 overall and 0-4 in C-USA play. The loss was the eighth-straight for the Tigers. Southern Miss improves to 15-3, 3-1 in league play.
Maja Jovanovic led Memphis with 15 kills, while Carolyn Baker and Altrese Hawkins each downed 11 kills. Christine Bach handed out 38 assists. However, the Tigers committed 15 service errors. In addition, the U of M was out dueled in kills (52-47), assists (47-40) and digs (67-51).
Libero Becky Shaffer paced the Memphis defense with 16 digs, while defensive specialist Rachel Theard picked up 12 digs. Baker made six total blocks.
Behind Mell's 23 kills, no other Southern miss hitter reached nine kills. USM setter Kelsea Seymour led all players with 45 assists. Maia Ivanova posted a match-high 20 digs, while Sara Jane Bowden made a match-best seven total blocks.
Memphis will regroup as it looks to break through the win column in league play with its next match coming on Sunday versus UCF. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. CST.
