Larry O. Finch Center
The Larry O. Finch Recreational Center changed its tenants in the winter of 2018 when the Tigers volleyball program took over the facility. The men’s basketball program moved into its new home, the Laurie-Walton Basketball Training Center, in November 2017.
The volleyball program made the Finch Center its home where the Tigers train and practice, and in 2020, play. The first match played in the Finch Center took place on January 22, 2021 where Memphis defeated Southern Illinois University 3-1.
Memphis held their first tournament in the 2021 season with the Tiger Brawl. The Tigers hosted Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Arkansas State and UT-Martin from September 17-19.
At the end of February 2020, the Finch Center was converted into a shooting range to host the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships. It was the first time in program history Memphis served as the host site for the annual league championships.
The $3.2 million, 31,000-square-foot center still has many of the same amenities the men’s basketball program enjoyed while it was housed in the facility from 2000-17.
The Finch Center underwent major renovations in the summer of 2023 to improve the player and fan experience. Through the donation of services from Sports Floor Inc., a female-owned sports flooring company, and other 901Women supporters, the upgraded floor brings in a higher caliber atmosphere for the volleyball team.
On the ground level of the facility, the once regulation-sized basketball court has been turned into three full size courts and a half court for setter and blocking practice for the volleyball program. Off the practice courts are a locker room; a video room; a players’ lounge that is spacious enough to hold team functions; and a fully-equipped training room that includes heat packs, electrical stimulation units, ultrasound, whirlpools, three treatment and two taping tables, as well as a separate doctor's examination room.
The second level of the Finch Center has a dining area for team post-practice meals. In addition, coaches’ locker rooms are on the second floor.
The Larry O. Finch Center was dedicated Feb. 24, 2000.
In Finch’s three years as a player at Memphis, the Tigers recorded a 63-21 record and either won or tied for two Missouri Valley Conference championships. He scored 1,869 career points and averaged 26.8 points in the 1973 NCAA Tournament where the Tigers advanced to the national championship game.
Finch was named All-America honorable mention by both the Associated Press and UPI and was the 1972 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year.
As a coach, Finch is the second-winningest coach in Tigers history, posting a 220-130 record in 11 seasons. Under his leadership, Memphis advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times, including the Elite Eight in 1992 and the Sweet 16 in 1995.
