Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Louisville

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Louisville, ranked second in C-USA, defeated the Memphis Tiger volleyball squad, 3-1, here Friday evening. Louisville improves to 13-3 overall, 8-2 in C-USA, while Memphis drops to 15-4 on the year, 5-4 in C-USA.
Louisville came out strong and defeated Memphis, 31-29 and 30-22, in games one and two before Memphis was able to stop the Cardinals with a 30-25 win in game two. After several lead changes in the fourth game, Louisville ended the match with a 30-27 victory in game four.
Senior Ginger Garrett led the Tiger offense with 20 kills and three service aces. It was her third match of 20 or more kills this season. Garrett also totaled six digs and three assisted blocks in the loss. Seniors Adrianne Edmonds and Emily Eichmann followed Garrett in hitting with 19 kills and 13 kills, respectively. Sophomore Shella Neba also recorded double-digit kills with 12. Edmonds led Memphis in hitting percentage with a .370 mark, including 19 kills and just two errors in 46 total attempts. Senior Amie Hamilton led the defense with 16 digs and also tallied a match-high 57 assists.
"We knew going in that this would be a tough weekend for us as we face the number one and number two teams in our league," said Memphis head coach Carrie Yerty. "We are going to have to come back strong Saturday and give everything we have against Cincinnati. It's important for us to pick up a win tomorrow at home since we will be on the road for four of our last six conference matches."
Junior Sonja Percan led Louisville in hitting with 23 kills and a .320 hitting mark. She also totaled 11 digs and three assisted blocks in the Cardinal victory. Sophomores Anastasia Zaitseva and Benny Flynn also totaled double digit kills for UL with 17 and 10, respectively. Zaitseva, who led the defense with 17 digs, hit well above Louisville's team percentage of .336 with a .424 hitting mark. She also recorded an ace, a solo block and six assisted blocks, while Flynn recorded nine assisted blocks.
Louisville led the match in blocking with 16 total blocks and in digs with 72. The Tigers totaled seven team blocks and 50 digs. UL also outhit the Tigers, .336 to .215, but Memphis led the match in service aces with eight.
The Tigers will host league leader Cincinnati on Saturday at 7 p.m. Louisville travels to Saint Louis for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday.
