Memphis Sweep Alabama A&M for Tenth Win of the Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (10-11, 1-5 American) swept Alabama A&M (14-5, 5-1 SWAC) inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening set, both teams battled early before the Tigers went on back-to-back 3-0 runs with kills from Jasmyn Tate, Brianna Washington and Janyah Henderson to take an 8-4 lead. The Bulldogs responded with a few kills of their own from Rayishon Jackman, Sana Dennis and Fatima Ramirez, but Tate's four kills helped Memphis close out the set, 25-17.
The Tigers carried that momentum into the second set, using a 12-0 run with kills from Henderson, Tate and Zaniah Hoskins to stretch Memphis' advantage to 13-4. Alabama A&M chipped away at its deficit, but back-to-back kills from Za'Niya Boyles closed out the set, 25-13.
The Bulldogs pushed back in the final frame, going point-for-point with the Tigers through six ties. Memphis led 17-15 before a pair of attack errors allowed Alabama A&M to even the score late. Washington put the Tigers back ahead with a kill, but Nisaan Martinez responded to tie it again at 23-23. Sydney Marshall sealed the match for Memphis with a setter dump, giving the Tigers the 25-23 win and the sweep.
NOTABLES
- The victory marks Memphis' first win since Sept. 26 against Tulane and its 10th of the season.
- It is also the Tigers' first sweep since Sept. 23 against Mississippi Valley State.
- The Memphis offense had two players with at least 10 kills for the first time since a 3-1 victory over Tulane on Sept. 26.
- That match was also the last time that three Tigers recorded at least 10 digs in the same match.
- Zaniah Hoskins led the offense with 12 kills and 15 points, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 11 digs.
- The freshman tied her career high in aces with two in the win.
- Hoskins has now surpassed Amanda Hardt for the team-lead in kills with 282 on the season.
- Abigail Schlueter and Hoskins each had 11 digs to lead the defense.
- Schlueter added one ace, bringing her career total to 95.
- Maddy Bach posted a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.
- Jasmyn Tate recorded a season-high four blocks.
- Tate tied her season high in kills with 10 and set a new season high in points with 12.
- Setters Maddy Bach and Sydney Marshall both reached double-digit assists with 17 and 12, respectively.
- Janyah Henderson tallied eight kills and six block assists, finishing the night with 11 points.
- Brianna Washington matched her season high in blocks with three.
- Washington also totaled six kills on the attack.
- Taylor Hampton set a new career high in aces with two.
UP NEXT
Memphis continues its homestand by hosting Tulsa at 7 p.m. on Friday before closing the weekend against North Texas at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
