David Queck is in his fifth overall season and fourth as a full-time assistant with the Memphis track and field program. Queck joined head coach Kevin Robinson’s staff as the Tigers transitioned to the American Athletic Conference from Conference USA in 2012-13.
Â
Queck’s season as a volunteer assistant was in 2012-13, the Tigers’ final campaign in Conference USA. That year, Queck worked with the team’s sprints group. Queck moved to a full-time assistant role in 2013 and coached the squad’s multi-event athletes and jumps from 2013-16. This season, his focus shifts to working only the jumps in 2016-17.
Â
Queck has a good mix of veterans and newcomers with which to work in 2016-17. Leading the charge is senior Chardae Greenlee, a two-time American Athletic Conference triple jump champion and All-America performer. On the men’s side, Queck continues to tutor Olushola Olojo and Jordan Wesner. Last season, Olojo earned All-American Athletic Conference honors in both the long and triple jumps at the league indoor championships, and Wesner was an All-American Athletic Conference performer in the high jump at the conference indoor and outdoor championships. Wesner advanced to the NCAA Championships and earned All-America accolades.
Â
In his short time in the Bluff City, Queck’s numbers are quite impressive:
Â
26 | All-Conference honorees |
12 | Conference title holders |
8 | NCAA East Preliminaries qualifiers |
7 | NCAA All-Americans |
Queck’s star pupil, Luis Hanssler, wrapped up one of the most-decorated careers in Memphis track and field history in 2015-16. Hanssler, under Queck’s tutelage, set both the men’s indoor heptathlon (5,445 points) and outdoor decathlon (7,471 points) school records. Hanssler, a two-time All-American, competed in three NCAA Outdoor Championships meets and swept the American Athletic Conference heptathlon and decathlon titles three-consecutive seasons (2014-16).
Â
On the women’s side, Martine Bye had four top-three finishes (two indoor pentathlon/two outdoor heptathlon) the past two seasons. Bye also advanced to the NCAA East Preliminaries in the high jump in 2016.
Â
In the jumps, Queck coached Georgio Lynwood and Greenlee. Both hold school records and competed in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in their careers.
Â
Queck’s production in the jumps and multi-events is reflective of what the entire Memphis track and field program is doing in Robinson’s tenure, especially since Memphis athletics’ move to the American Athletic Conference in the summer of 2013. Some of the track and field program’s numbers over the last three seasons are impressive:

Also, in the short time in The American, the Tigers squads have had steady performances at the league championships. The men’s team has two top-three finishes at the last three conference outdoor meets (2nd in 2014; 3rd in 2016), and the women’s squad posted its best performance at the league outdoor championships since 1996 (3rd) with a fifth-place finish in 2015. At the 2016 outdoor meet, the women’s team scored the most points (86) since that 1996 third-place finish (102).
Â
Prior to Memphis
Queck served as a volunteer assistant for the Southern Miss track and field program while also working on his master’s degree from 2010-12. In his time with the Golden Eagles, Queck mentored three All-Conference USA performers and two sprinters that had 100-meter times ranked among the top-25 in the world.
Â
Student-Athlete Career (College/High School)
Before switching to the coaching ranks, Queck was a two-sport standout at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. Queck earned two football letters as a wide receiver and four track and field letters as a sprinter. He competed in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and also ran in the 4x100 meter relay. As a senior in 2010, Queck was a member of the Northern Sun Conference 4x100 meter championship team and earned all-league honors for that performance. He also received two additional All-Northern Sun Conference accolades in his career.
Â
As a prep student-athlete, Queck was a three-sport standout at Annandale High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track and field. Queck earned all-conference and all-area accolades and helped the Cardinals track and field program take home three state championships.
Â
Personal
The Annandale, Minn., native earned his bachelor’s degree in communications/broadcast journalism with a minor in coaching from St. Cloud State University in 2010. He also holds a master’s degree in human performance from Southern Miss in 2012.
Â
Queck is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach.
Â
Queck married the former Sarah Duhon in August of 2015. He is the son of Reverend Tom and Kathy Queck.
