MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (16-28, 8-11 American) baseball team fell to East Carolina (29-17-1, 13-6 American), 12-0, on Friday evening at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
Memphis tallied four hits on the day, but East Carolina used a six-run first inning to build early momentum that the Tigers couldn't quite catch.
Will Howell (4-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs over 2.1 innings of work. Memphis used three relievers out of the bullpen, who combined for three strikeouts over the final 4.3 innings of work.
Memphis is back in action on Saturday, May 2, for the second game of the series against East Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- East Carolina struck first with a six-run first inning, capitalizing on six hits and a sacrifice fly to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.
- The Pirates increased their advantage to 7-0 in the third inning following an RBI single to center field.
- After a quiet middle stretch, ECU added five insurance runs between the fifth and eighth innings to secure the 12-0 victory.
- The Tigers offense found some life late with singles from Webb Watson, Marcus Smith, Freddy Rodriguez, and Trae Cassidy, but the ECU pitching staff was able to strand the runners and preserve the shutout.
