Memphis Travels to Jackson State for Midweek Matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis softball heads south to Jackson, Mississippi for a midweek doubleheader against the Tigers of Jackson State.
Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. with broadcasts available on SWAC TV.
SCOUTING THE MEMPHIS TIGERS
Memphis (8-22, 1-8 American) looks to build off of its first American Conference win over the weekend against East Carolina, despite dropping the final two games of the series.
Ariel Davis still sits as the team's leader in batting average (.349), hits (30), runs (20), triples (two), home runs (five) and RBI (15), but other bats have been heating up as you look down the order. Deana Cunningham had a strong weekend against East Carolina, hitting .400 with two doubles, two RBI and a 1.467 OPS. Freshman Taylor Caton also shined in the series with a team-best .429 average while hitting her first career home run and striking out a career-high eight in the circle on Saturday.
Avery Stutts was key to Memphis' first conference win, only allowing one run in a complete game victory and working through multiple at-bats with runners in scoring position. Stutts also stands as the team's leader in innings pitched (58.1) and strikeouts (25), with fellow freshman Taylor Caton sitting close behind with 24 batters struck out. Jericho Tate leads the staff in ERA in her 42.2 innings so far this season, striking out 15.

Jackson State (14-12, 6-2 SWAC) is coming off a series sweep of Bethune-Cookman. The reigning SWAC champions hold a 4-1 record in five games against non-Division I opponents.
At the plate, the duo of Ka'Liyah Gipson and Jace Jackson lead the Tigers, both hitting above .400 with an OPS over 1.000. Gipson, hitting .470, also ranks within the top 15 in the NCAA with 20 stolen bases on the year. As a team, Jackson State ranks second in the country in stolen bases, stealing an average of 3.35 per game.
In the circle, a majority of innings have been split between Jorgina Gant and Brooklyn Morris. Gant (3.38 ERA) carries a 5-3 record, striking out 37 over 58 innings. Morris (6.55 ERA) is 4-5 over 51.1 innings. In last season's contest between the two programs, Gant threw three innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two batters hit by a pitch.
