Memphis Falls to East Carolina in Series Finale
Mar 22, 2026 | Softball
After Memphis took a 2-1 lead without recording a hit, a trio of strong innings by East Carolina put the game far out of reach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Avery Stutts logged one strikeout in the first but allowed consecutive hits that gave East Carolina one run in the opening inning.
- The Tigers gained a 2-1 lead in the second inning without recording a hit.
- Faith Brown and Neely Taylor drew walks and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
- Mya Clark drew a walk to load the bases.
- Kennedy Semien entered as a pinch hitter and worked a full-count walk to tie the game.
- After an East Carolina pitching change, Deana Cunningham was hit by a pitch to give Memphis its lead.
- The Pirates put themselves in good position with a six-run third inning.
- After the bases were loaded, Trinity Nichols logged a sacrifice fly before Lillian Martineau tripled to bring in two more runs.
- East Carolina executed a double steal to score Martineau from third.
- The next at-bat, Macey Ciamillo homered to left field to break the game open at 7-2.
- A pair of errors spelled disaster with Memphis allowing four runs in the fourth inning.
- After a leadoff batter reached on error and the next two batters reached, Nichols laced a two-RBI single down the left-field line.
- Nichols and Gabby Fowler then scored on a grounder to the pitcher, who spiked the throw.
- The Tigers got a run back on Taylor Caton's first career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- East Carolina loaded the bases for a second time and Chloe Geijer brought one run home on a hit-by-pitch before Deter hit a grand slam to give the Pirates a 13-run lead.
- After a Deana Cunningham walk and Kylie Waldrep hit-by-pitch, Jasmine Mack singled off the first baseman's glove and Cunningham scored during the ensuing rundown.
- Waldrep was thrown out attempting to reach third on the play.
- Faith Brown followed Mack with an RBI double off the wall, but Memphis' final two batters struck out to end the game.
- The Tigers currently sit at ninth in the American with a 1-8 record and will face eighth-place Tulsa next weekend.
- Nine of East Carolina's runs came with two outs in the inning.
- Taylor Caton was 1-for-2 in the loss with her first collegiate home run.
- Caton also logged a strikeout in the circle.
- Faith Brown logged one hit, an RBI double, in the series finale.
- She now sits in a three-way tie for the team lead in double with Ariel Davis and Jasmine Mack, all sitting at five.
- Brown is now second on the team in RBI with 13.
- Jasmine Mack logged a hit and run scored in the game.
- Kennedy Semien recorded an RBI walk on her first plate appearance after entering in the second inning.
- Deana Cunningham also registered an RBI without recording a hit, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
- Cunningham also recorded one run scored.
- Neely Taylor notched a run scored after drawing a walk in the second inning.
Memphis travels to Jackson State (14-12) for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting Tulsa (10-19) at Tigers Softball Complex.
