Memphis Unable to Bounce Back Against Roadrunners in 5-1 Loss

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Memphis (7-18, 0-5 American) softball team dropped the middle game of its series with UTSA (16-12, 5-0 American) by a score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers were unable to overcome an early four-run deficit, struggling in key hitting situations and leaving 11 runners on base in the loss.

Memphis will close out its road conference series against UTSA tomorrow at noon at Roadrunner Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis stranded runners on second and third in its first at-bats of the game after Faith Brown drew a one-out walk and Ariel Davis was hit by a pitch.
- They were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrey Williams.
- The Roadrunners took a lead in the first inning for the second-straight game, bringing three runs across to score.
- A single by Brookelynn Meador that hung up just long enough to find the outfield grass scored the first run of the game.
- UTSA's next two runs came on a bases-loaded walk, followed by a sacrifice fly.
- UTSA tacked on another run on a wild pitch in the second inning.
- Memphis worked out of a leadoff double in the third with a lineout double play from Deana Cunningham to Taylor Caton to end the threat.
- The Tigers worked a run across in the fourth inning after a trio of singles by Kennedy Semien, Deana Cunningham and Taylor Caton was followed by an RBI infield single by Isabella Hune.
- Hune, a San Antonio native, picked up her first RBI as a Tiger on the hit.
- Memphis stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in its half of the fifth.
- Ariel Davis was hit by a pitch for the second time and Jasmine Mack reached on a fielder's choice before both failing to score in the inning.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Memphis stranded the bases loaded after three Roadrunner singles with two diving plays by Kennedy Semien and Deana Cunningham.
- The Roadrunners extended their lead to four runs on an RBI single by Sabrina Wick to score Demiree Stafford, who reached on a double.
- Down to its final three outs, Ariel Davis and Jasmine Mack reached on singles and were stranded when the next two batters flew out and struck out to end the game.
- Memphis is now 3-17 when allowing five or more runs.
- Ariel Davis was 1-for-2 in the game and reached a total of three times, getting hit by a pitch twice.
- Davis now leads the Tigers with six hit-by-pitches on the year, also now having a team-best .483 on-base percentage.
- Isabella Hune logged a multi-hit performance while also recording her first RBI as a Tiger.
- The San Antonio, Texas native also recorded a stolen base and is now 4-for-4 on the season.
- Taylor Caton finished with two hits in the game, including her first collegiate hit.
- The true freshman also made her first career start at second base.
- Deana Cunningham was 1-for-4 with Memphis' lone run scored.
- Jasmine Mack logged one hit and reached twice on a fielder's choice after being inserted at the catcher spot.
- Kennedy Semien picked up a hit in the loss, moving her into second on the team with 18 hits on the season.
- Neely Taylor and Faith Brown each reached on a walk.
