Memphis Travels to San Antonio for First Road Conference Series Against UTSA
Mar 12, 2026 | Softball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After a cancellation of a midweek nonconference game, Memphis looks ahead to this weekend for its first road trip of the conference slate against UTSA.
This weekend's games are scheduled for 6 p.m., 1 p.m. and noon with Jordy Fee Platt on play-by-play for Friday and Saturday, while EJ Sanchez will call Sunday's game. Sidney Cox will be on color for the opening and closing games of the series.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (7-16, 0-3 American) faced stout competition in its first weekend of American Conference play, being swept by the preseason No. 2 team in South Florida. The Tigers held leads in the third inning of the first and third games of the series but fell late against the Bulls' consistent offense.
Ariel Davis leads the Tigers offense in hits, runs, triples, home runs and RBI while carrying a .368 average and being the only Tiger to have started all 23 games this season. Paris Brienesse has emerged as a consistent piece in the Memphis outfield, leading all Tigers with a .370 average, while Faith Brown has provided a key bat at first base, hitting .333 and joining Davis as the only players with at least 10 runs scored and RBI this season.
Memphis continues to stray from its identity during the first year of the Prater era, being just six home runs shy of tying its full-season total from 2025, while only stealing 21 bases through 23 games. One piece that has not changed is Prater's strategy of moving runners, as the Tigers are 12th in the NCAA in sacrifice hits with 19 on the year, led by Deana Cunningham's eight sacrifice bunts.
Jericho Tate and Avery Stutts have become Memphis' primary pitching duo near the halfway point of the season. Tate carries a team-best 5.05 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 34.2 innings, limiting opposing hitters to a .275 average. Stutts has thrown 42 innings, including two complete games, and has a team-leading 15 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
UTSA (14-12, 3-0 American) looks to build off a sweep of Tulsa in the opening weekend, while suffering a midweek loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
UTSA's most prevalent talent is freshman pitcher Arlette Hernandez, who is 8-4 with a 2.73 ERA in 13 starts and 17 appearances this season. The first-year player has more strikeouts herself (69) than Memphis' entire pitching staff and has thrown 79.1 innings on the year.
At the plate, UTSA has five qualified hitters above the .300 mark, led by Taryn Madlock and Sabrina Wick. Madlock leads the Roadrunners in runs (16), home runs (six) and RBI (19), while Wick's 33 hits and seven stolen bases are top marks on the team.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UTSA
The Tigers and Roadrunners are locked at three games apiece in the series, with UTSA taking two games in 2024 and the Tigers taking two in 2025.
Last season, Memphis earned its only conference series victory of the season over UTSA, including a 9-8 series finale win that saw Roadrunners head coach Vann Steudemann get ejected after a review.
