Pitts’ Home Run Gives Tigers AAC Sweep Over UAB
May 04, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis baseball freshman Jack Pitts' seventh-inning home run powered the Tigers to a 2-1 win over UAB on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game American Athletic Conference series sweep at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
The Tigers improved to 19-28 (7-14 AAC) on the season while the Blazers dropped to 23-25 (7-14 AAC) on the season.
"It was a great weekend," head coach Matt Riser said. "Good teams are content to win two, great teams sweep when they have the opportunity to … We did a really good job of making pitches when we had to and making plays when we had to, and then Jack Pitts, obviously the man of the hour with the big swing there to give us the lead late. Proud of the guys."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got on the board early when Seth Cox drove in Cade Greer with a sac-fly to center field after Greer doubled to lead off the game.
• UAB got its lone run of the contest on a solo home run by Nick Hollifield in the top of the second inning to tie the game at a run apiece.
• The game stayed deadlocked until Pitts broke the tie with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning with a no-doubt solo shot to left field to give Memphis the lead.
• Closer Brayden Sanders slammed the door on the Blazers for the second day in a row in the ninth inning, earning his second save of the weekend and fifth of the season as the Tigers hung on for the 2-1 win to complete the series sweep.
NOTABLES

• The Tigers managed just four hits in the win (tied for the fewest this season in a win).
• Pitts ended the game 1-for-3 with the game-winning solo home run – his third of the season.
• Greer led off the game with a double and scored a run, ending the day 1-for-4.
• Freshman Michael Politte finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a double – his fifth of the season.
• Shane Cox had a 1-for-3 day at the plate and raised his season batting average to .270.

• LHP Luke Ellis made his second-consecutive Sunday start and threw four innings of one-run baseball. He struck out a pair and allowed one run (solo home run) on three hits and one walk.
• RHP Kylan Stepter and LHP Logan Rushing combined for a scoreless eighth inning.
