Tigers Fall in Midweek Matchup vs. No. 6 Ole Miss
Apr 08, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped a midweek matchup to No. 6 Ole Miss, 10-0, at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday night.
The Tigers moved to 12-20 (1-8 American) on the season while the sixth-ranked Rebels improved to 25-7 overall.
"They're a really good club and we knew that going into it, but I felt like we kept punching ourselves in the face tonight," head coach Matt Riser. "We were down to 11 position players tonight, but that's no excuse to do what we did … We had some opportunities early with some guys on base and some good at-bats, but our baserunning hurt us."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ole Miss came put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. A two-out Tiger error followed by a pair of singles and a pair of walks made it 2-0.
• A second Memphis error allowed Rebel Brayden Randle to reach base to lead off the second inning. He came around to score on a one-out single by Luke Hill to give Ole Miss a 3-0 lead.
• The Rebels added two runs in the third on a sac-fly and an RBI ground out to build their leave to 5-0.
• Ole Miss added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.
• The Tigers were unable to get any offense going in the seventh inning and the Rebels took the game by a score of 10-0 in seven innings.
NOTABLES
• Two-way player Seth Cox made his first career start on the mound for the Tigers. He went two innings and took the loss, allowing four runs with only one of them being earned. The right-hander allowed three hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
• Will Vasseur had a 2-for-3 night with a pair of singles.
• The starting pitcher, Seth Cox, also served as the DH and went 2-for-3 with a double.
• Justin Fogel got the start behind the plate for just the second time this season and threw out his third runner of the season on a strike-out, caught-stealing double play to end the second inning. Offensively, he was 1-for-3 with a single.
• Center fielder Cade Greer was on base once with the lone walk of the night for Memphis.
• In the fourth inning, RHP Logan Stelling made his Memphis debut on the mound in relief. He allowed one run on one hit with a walk.
• RHP Hayden Donahue threw a perfect inning of relief in the seventh, striking out the final two men he faced to end the inning. He threw just 13 pitches.
• Memphis allowed 10 runs, but only five were earned due to four errors defensively.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers hit the road this weekend for Boca Raton, Florida, for a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Florida Atlantic (23-9, 5-4 AAC). The Owls are coming off a weekend sweep of preseason-AAC favorite East Carolina last weekend.
