Apr 11, 2025 | Baseball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell 2-1 in the opener of a three-game American Athletic Conference series to Florida Atlantic on Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Tigers moved to 12-21 (1-9 American) on the season while the Owls improved to 24-9 (6-4 American) overall. RHP Seth Garner went seven innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking a pair to mark his third-straight start going six-plus innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a true pitcher's duel, Garner and Florida Atlantic starter Trey Beard each threw up a pair of zeroes in the first two innings.
• Center fielder Cade Greer put some life into the Memphis offense with a two-out double down the left-field line in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Will Vasseur then came to the plate and delivered a two-strike single to left-center field to plate the game's first run and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
• The Owls matched the run with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. A two-out single by FAU's Jake Duer tied the game at a run apiece.
• Florida Atlantic took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as the Tigers rolled a 4-6-3 double play, trading a pair of outs for a run.
• Shortstop Creek Robertson led off the fifth inning with his seventh double of the season, but the Tigers were unable to convert on the scoring opportunity.
• Garner struck out the final batter of the inning in his final four frames before turning it over to Will Howell for the eighth inning. Howell threw up a zero and allowed just one hit with a strikeout.
• Memphis was unable to tie the game in the top of the ninth after Shane Cox reached on a walk and the Owls took game one, 2-1.
NOTABLES
• Garner lowered his season ERA to 3.51 (51.1 IP) with his fourth-consecutive outing allowing three runs or fewer. Despite the strong performance on the mound, he was tagged with the loss to go to 2-4 on the season overall.
