Bats Heat Up as Tigers Even Series with Owls in Boca Raton
Apr 12, 2025 | Baseball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Memphis baseball team defeated Florida Atlantic, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon to even up a three-game American Athletic Conference series at FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida.
The Tigers improved to 13-21 (2-9 American) on the season while the Owls fell to 24-10 (6-5 American) overall. The Memphis offense came to life and recorded 13 hits to power the Tigers to a win as five Tigers turned in multi-hit performances.
"Really proud of the guys for bouncing back," head coach Matt Riser said. "We did a good job of jumping on them early. It was back and forth all day and it was good to see our offense be able to battle, and that goes for the whole lineup, one through nine."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got on the board early when Cade Greer scored on a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Seth Cox after Greer led the game off with a single.
• The Owls evened the score at a run apiece in the bottom of the first on a one-out single by John Schroeder.
• Chase Nixon gave the Tigers the lead back in the top of the third as Greer crossed home for the second time of the game.
• Florida Atlantic's Jake Millan hit a two-out, three-run home run to give the Owls a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
• Memphis tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning. Cy Turner doubled to right-center field and drove in Shane Cox before Daniel Perez tied it up with an opposite-field RBI single, driving in Turner.
• A two-run single by Seth Cox in the fifth put Memphis in front, 6-4, as Will Vasseur and Turner both scored.
• The Owls struck for their second three-run home run of the contest following a two-out error by the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth, giving Florida Atlantic a 7-6 advantage.
• A two-out single back up the middle by Nixon in the top of the sixth tied the game back up at 7-7.
• Nixon led off the top of the ninth with another single and Seth Cox followed it up with a double to left field to give Memphis a pair of runners in scoring position with nobody out. That prompted the fifth pitching change of the game for the Owls, but it didn't matter as catcher Justin Fogel slapped a ball the opposite way over the shortstop's head for an RBI single to put the Tigers back in front.
• After recording the final two outs of the eighth inning, RHP Davis Oswalt came back out for the ninth to finish it off. Oswalt allowed a leadoff single before proceeding to strike out the side to secure the 8-7 victory.
