Tigers Win Third-Straight with 13-3 Run-Rule Win in Conway
Apr 15, 2025 | Baseball
CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Memphis baseball team went on the road and defeated Central Arkansas, 13-3, in seven innings on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium.
The Tigers improved to 15-21 (3-9 American) on the season and have now won three-straight games and four of their last six, while the Bears fell to 14-21 overall. Memphis used a six-run fourth and a four-run seventh inning to coast to the run-rule win.
"I thought it was a good night for us," head coach Matt Riser said. "I thought Seth Cox did a really nice job for us in his longest outing as a Tiger. He's been building up to that and to give us four innings tonight was imperative. Our offense got off to a slow start, but then we really locked in. I was really proud of our baserunning, I thought it really changed the game. We went first to third a lot and took backside 90's on throws and it really changed everything for us in the box."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Central Arkansas got on the board first when Carter Alexander slapped a two-out RBI double just inside the right-field line in the bottom of the second inning.
• Memphis answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Cade Greer singled in Daniel Perez after he led the inning off with a double, and that was followed up by an RBI groundout by Will Vasseur.
• Shortstop Creek Robertson started a six-run fourth inning for the Tigers with a two-run double that scored Cade Tucker and Shane Cox. That led to an RBI single past a diving second baseman by Perez that brought in Robertson, followed by a two-run single up the middle by Vasseur and finally an RBI double by Chase Nixon to complete the big inning.
• After four strong innings by starting pitcher Seth Cox, Memphis went to the bullpen for Connor Pittman. The Bears struck for a pair of runs on a two-run single by Nathan Negre to trim the Tiger lead to 8-3.
• Greer came in to score on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to move the Memphis lead back to six runs.
• Greer got the scoring started again in the seventh with a hustle double on a ground ball back up the middle, ending up on second base while Robertson crossed home to score and make it a 10-3 game.
• Another two-run single by Vasseur drove in catcher Jack Pitts and Greer before a Nixon triple tucked just inside the first base bag rolled all the way to the right-field corner and allowed Vasseur to score from first to make it a 10-run lead.
• After a one-two-three sixth inning, Pittman went back out to finish the game and earned a three-inning save for the first of his career as Memphis won 13-3 in seven innings.
NOTABLES
• Freshman catcher Jack Pitts made his first career start and had a strong debut, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and three runs scored. He just missed out on his first-career hit being a no-doubt home run, but it hooked just outside of the left-field foul pole.
• Nixon ended the night 3-for-5 and just a home run shy of the cycle after ripping his second triple of the season in the seventh inning. He drove in a pair to grow his team-leading total to 21 RBI on the season.
• Vasseur went 2-for-5 and ended the night with a career-high five RBI. It marked the first five-RBI game for a Tiger since Jacob Compton (4/20/24 at Charlotte).
• Greer went 2-for-4 with a double from the lead-off spot with a pair of RBI, two runs and a walk.
• Robertson ended the night 2-for-4 with a two-run double and scored twice.
• Perez stayed hot with a 2-for-3 night at the plate including a double and drove in a pair of runs.
• Seth Cox earned the first win of his Memphis career on the mound after throwing a career-high four innings. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk, striking out three.
• Pittman earned the first save of his career after pitching the final three frames and allowing a pair of runs on three hits. He struck out three.
• Shane Cox went 1-for-3 with a single.
