Tigers Fall in Extras at Lipscomb
Mar 19, 2025 | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped a one-run game at Lipscomb on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 in 10 innings at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville.
The Tigers moved to 11-9 on the season while the Bisons improved to 6-13 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Shane Cox came home to score on a sac-fly by shortstop Creek Robertson.
• In the bottom half of the second, the Bisons pushed an unearned run across to even the score at a run apiece. Lipscomb added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sac-fly and an RBI single from Kai Holm to take a 3-1 lead on the Tigers.
• Getting the start at DH and making his Tiger debut was Pitt transfer Justin Fogel. The redshirt senior came through clutch with a game-tying, two-run double for his first hit in a Memphis uniform in the top of the sixth inning.
• Both teams' pitching staffs held the opposing offenses at bay, throwing zeroes up the rest of the way and forcing extra innings in a 3-3 deadlock.
• In the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded, Lipscomb batter Keaton Mahon worked a full count before drawing a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run and give the Bisons the extra-inning victory.
NOTABLES
• James Smith IV had a 2-for-4 day at the plate to lead the Tigers offensively. He was also hit by a pitch and scored a run.
• Fogel doubled and drove in a pair of runs in his Memphis debut while also drawing two walks.
• Shane Cox ended the game 1-for-4 with a walk and a pair of runs scored.
• Will Vasseur, Chase Nixon and Cy Turner each recorded a hit.
• RHP Caden Robinson made his first midweek start of the season (fifth overall) and threw four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking just one.
• RHP Charlie Smith threw three scoreless innings of relief (2 H, 0 R, 2 BB).
• RHP Davis Oswalt threw a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout (1 H).
• The Tigers totaled 10 hits in the loss but just one went for extra bases (Fogel; 2B).
• RHP Hayden Donahue was tagged with the loss to go to 0-1. He recorded the final out of the ninth before hitting a pair of batters in the 10th inning. He allowed no hits.
• With the loss, Memphis dropped to 10-2 this season when holding opponents to four runs or less.
