Tigers Take Rubber Match from Lions, 7-4, Win Fourth Series
Mar 16, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team earned its fourth series win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Lindenwood, 7-4, in the series finale and rubber match at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
The Tigers improved to 11-8 overall with the win as Lindenwood dropped to 9-12 on the season. With the victory, Memphis has now won four of its first five series to begin the season, including a pair of series wins over 2024 NCAA Regional-qualifying teams (SEMO, LA Tech).
"I thought we did a good job of coming out with the right intent today," head coach Matt Riser said. "We talked about winning the moment last night and the moment presented itself early. Isaac [Lucas] did a good job getting us off to a strong start in his first weekend start … Then Cy Turner coming through there early with the three-run shot, that's exactly what we're talking about."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis struck first in the bottom of the second inning to get on the board first for the first time all weekend. Cy Turner came to the plate and crushed a three-run shot to right field for his second home run of the season, driving in Seth Cox and Jonah Sutton.
• Lindenwood got a run back on a two-out single in the top of the third inning to make the score 3-1, Memphis.
• The Lions added another run on a solo home run by Bryson Arnette in the top of the fourth to cut the Memphis lead to a run.
• Making his second-consecutive start, outfielder Cade Greer came to the plate with the bases juiced and nobody out in the bottom of the fourth. He delivered a two-run, hustle double shot back up the middle to give the Tigers a 5-2 advantage. Later in the inning, Memphis added two more runs – the first coming on an RBI ground out from Chase Nixon followed by a sac-fly off the bat of James Smith IV to score Greer.
• Lindenwood struck for a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth on the second solo shot of the game from Arnette to make the score 7-4, Memphis.
• Closer Brayden Sanders recorded the final four outs of the game, including a pair of punch outs, to earn his second save of the season and lock down the Memphis win.
NOTABLES
• LHP Isaac Lucas made his first weekend start of the season (fourth overall) on the mound and was sharp. The Oakland, California, native threw five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, striking out a season-high eight batters and walking just two. He earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
• Seth Cox started at DH before moving to the mound in the sixth inning. He went 2.2 innings and allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking zero. He also scored a run and stole a base.
• Turner ended the afternoon 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and pair of runs scored. The big fly was his second of the season and his first since Opening Day in his first at-bat of the year.
• Shane Cox had a multi-hit day as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
• Greer went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a walk, a run and a stolen base.
• Smith IV ended the day 1-for-3 with a 114 mph. double off the top of the wall in left-center field. He also drove in a run on a sac-fly and was hit by a pitch.

• Catcher Jonah Sutton went hitless but walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
• Sanders recorded the final four outs with a pair of strikeouts to earn his second save of the season and keep his season ERA at zeroes.
