Feb 26, 2025 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers softball (9-7) is set to travel to Monroe, La. for the Best of the Bayou Tournament from Feb. 28 to March 2.
Memphis will play five games this weekend. Two games will be against Tarleton State, another two games will be played against the host ULM Warhawks and a single game against Southeast Missouri (SEMO).
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis enters the weekend on short rest after falling to North Alabama in a midweek matchup on Wednesday. The Tigers were held to just one run in their 5-1 loss to the Lions.
The Tigers offense continues to be led by Kennedy Semien. The center fielder has the team lead in average (.457), hits (21), runs (14), walks (10), total bases (29) and is tied for the team lead in doubles (5) and RBIs (14). Memphis has also found consistency in Neely Taylor, who has come back from injury to be the only Tiger to start in all 16 games this season. She holds a .400 batting average and a 1.049 OPS with six extra-base hits.
Three bats have stood out as key contributors for Memphis. The trio of Shelby Durbin, Zoe Adebayo and Taniyah Brown have been mainstays in the heart of the order. Durbin recorded her first home run as a Memphis Tiger against North Alabama on Wednesday, when she was also the only Tiger to record a multi-hit game. Adebayo holds the team lead in home runs (3), triples (3) and is tied with Semien for the lead in RBIs with 14. Taniyah Brown has five doubles and two home runs with a .350 batting average
Rylee Dugar has been a leader of the Memphis pitching staff thus far. She currently stands at four wins with a 2.60 ERA and 28 strikeouts in the circle. Taniyah Brown has also been a strong contributor in the circle, leading Memphis in innings pitched with 40.1 and holding a 3.30 ERA with 26 strikeouts thrown.
SCOUTING THE BEST OF THE BAYOU
Tarleton State (11-5) most recently went undefeated in the Tarleton Invitational before falling to Houston, 6-3, on Feb. 25. The Texans boast a talented offense, with a team batting average of .328 and a total of 48 extra-base hits recorded. Austin Germain leads Tarleton State with a .480 average and nine doubles. In the circle the Texans give up an average of 3.43 earned runs per game, with Hannah Blincoe leading the staff. She holds a 2.60 ERA with 35 strikeouts. Shelby Schultz has also thrown 28.1 innings with 43 batters struck out.
Southeast Missouri (4-4) enters the tournament after going 2-2 at the Frost Classic. The Redhawks outscored opponents 18-13 with wins against IU Indy and Indiana State. Tatum Gerwitz leads the SEMO offense with a .440 average, but Sydney Melton has the team lead in extra-base hits with six, all of which are doubles. The SEMO pitching staff has a team ERA of 2.51, with three pitchers having thrown at least 20 percent of their innings.
The host Warhawks (9-7) enter on a seven-game winning streak. They went 6-0 in the Warhawk Invitational before defeating Northwestern State on Wednesday, an opponent that Memphis went 1-1 against earlier this season. ULM has a balanced attack, with six qualified hitters holding an average above .300 and four hitters with at least 17 hits. Four players have over 10 RBIs, accounting for 63 percent of ULM's offensive production.
