May 12, 2024 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis baseball team won the finale of a three-game American Athletic Conference series, 3-2, at UAB on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The Tigers improved to 22-30 overall (9-15 AAC) with the win as the Blazers dropped to 24-26 (11-13 AAC) overall.
"Great job by the guys," head coach Matt Riser said. "We did a good job making their starter work early with good at-bats until Jacob Compton broke through with the solo shot in the fourth, which was huge for momentum. Was proud of how they grinded today and we got some big pitches in some big moments."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game held scoreless through the first three innings. Compton broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to right-center field to put Memphis on the board.
• RBI singles by the Blazers in the fifth and sixth innings – both with two outs – gave UAB a 2-1 lead.
• The Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the eighth and broke through for a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI single by Daunte Stuart and Compton.
• Jake Curtis bridged the gap on the mound between starter Caden Robinson and closer Brayden Sanders with three innings of one-run relief from the sixth through eighth innings, striking out four.
• Sanders came in and slammed the door in the ninth – capped off by a great sliding catch from center fielder Alex Fernandes – to give the Tiger closer his AAC-leading ninth save of the season as Memphis held on to win the finale, 3-2.
NOTABLES
• Robinson started and went five innings, allowing just one run on three hits (3 K, 4 BB).
• Curtis earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season while Sanders added to his conference lead by picking up his ninth save of the year.
• Compton's homer was his team-leading 14th of the season and tied him for the conference lead. He ended the day 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
• Shane Cox finished 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.
• Stuart reached base with an RBI single in the eighth and has now reached base safely in 69 of his past 70 games dating back to last season.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back in action next Thursday to kick off the final regular-season series of the season against Wichita State at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in Memphis, Tennessee.
