Owls Force Series Rubber Match with Tigers
Mar 29, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers dropped to 13-16 overall (2-3 AAC) with the loss as the Owls improved to 15-9 (3-2 AAC) on the year.
"I thought we had a good ballgame going," head coach Matt Riser said. "They got off with a quick start and I'm proud of us for responding. Their starter had a 1.80 on the year, so to be able to get down big that early and to respond like that with a five-run inning was a great response."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A three-run home run by Florida Atlantic catcher John Schroeder in the top of the first put the Owls in front early. Andrew McKenna hit his second home run in as many days for the Owls in the second inning – a two-run shot to put FAU in front 5-0.
• Memphis rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to reset the game. Tiger shortstop Jake Curtis muscled up for his second big fly of the season to left field, driving in Pierre Seals to shrink the Owls' lead to three. Will Marcy singled in another pair of runs to make the score 5-4, and Austin Baskin tied the game at five apiece with an RBI double down the left-field line.
• The second inning scoring outburst proved to be the only runs the Tiger offense produced in the loss.
• Florida Atlantic had the long ball working as they clubbed five more home runs from the third through ninth innings. An RBI single in the fifth inning by Carter Brady was the lone run the remainder of the contest not scored on a home run by the Owls as Florida Atlantic evened the series with a 13-5 win.
NOTABLES
• Curtis went 3-for-4 at the plate with his second home run of the season, two RBI and a run scored.
• Seals improved his batting average to .333 on the year with a 2-for-4 effort that included a double and a run scored.
• Baskin ended the game 2-for5 with an RBI double.
• Marcy went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot with a pair of RBI, a stolen base and scored once.
• Alex Fernandes was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
• Seth Cox and Jacob Compton both singled in the loss.
• Daunte Stuart's 46-game on-base streak that dated back to last season came to an end with an 0-for-4 night.
• Luke Ellis started on the mound and took the loss (2.0 IP, 6 R, 1 K).
• Seth Garner threw five solid innings of relief, striking out six Owls and allowing a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks.
• Logan Rushing threw 1.2 innings of relief and struck out three, allowing one run on one hit (solo home run).
