No. 20 Memphis Takes Down No. 24 Oklahoma State, 4-2, on Road
Mar 02, 2024 | Men's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior Conor Gannon delivered the clinching point for the No. 20 University of Memphis men's tennis team to defeat No. 24 Oklahoma State, 4-2, Saturday evening in Stillwater.
The Tigers improved to 10-3 on the year and halted the Cowboys' (11-3) seven-match win streak. It's their second victory of the season against a ranked foe.
"We had a battle today in a very difficult place against a very difficult and tough team," Memphis assistant coach Eduardo Mena said. "Pablo [Alemany] and Charlie [Barry] showed why they are ranked high in doubles and came up with a very good performance showing the consistency they've been bringing throughout the year. Pau [Fanlo] and Sam [Reeve] battled back in the set to take the match into a tiebreaker and stay tough to win the doubles point."
"We are very happy to be where we are after half of our season, but this team is hungry for more and we are only starting. We can't wait to continue improving and for the next matches to get here."
Memphis took the early lead after coming from behind to win the doubles point. Oklahoma State won 6-2 on court two, before the 25th-ranked duo of Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry evened things up from court one, 6-4.
Locked in a battle at the third position, Paul Fanlo and Sam Reeve outlasted Goran Zgola and Erik Schiessl in a tiebreaker, 7-6(6), to secure the first point for Memphis.
In singles action, the Cowboys got on the board first with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court five. The Tigers responded with the next two wins. Alemany earned a ranked victory, rolling through No. 15 Tyler Zink
In straight sets (6-3, 6-3) from the top line before freshman Maxime Dubouch swept his opponent 6-3, 7-5 on court six.
Oklahoma State tried to stay in the match with a three-set victory on court three, but Memphis' Conor Gannon took down No. 49 Alex Garcia on court two 7-6(5), 6-2 to clinch the Tiger victory.
"In singles, our guys picked up the positive energy from winning the doubles point and produced some good tennis," Mena said. "Pablo had an amazing performance and showed once more that he is one of the best players in college tennis. Connor also fought hard to win a very tough first set against a good player and kept the energy to come up with a huge win.
"We are also glad to have Max back in the lineup after a long injury. He came out ready to play and got a very tough win. We have to give credit also to Pau, Harry [Rock] and Moritz [Kudernatsch] who, even though their matches weren't going their way, they showed resilience to stay in the match and fought hard to keep the momentum in singles."
Memphis moved to 4-0 on the road this season and won its fifth match of the season against a Power Five opponent.
