Baskin Walks Off in Game Two Win Over Wright State, Tigers Aim for Sunday Sweep
Mar 02, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers (7-5) improved to two games over .500 with the win and have now won three-straight games for the first time this season.
"I think the impressive part for our club is that we're learning and there's no quit," head coach Matt Riser said. "We went up early, got down in the middle, got back up, then back to even and then found a way to walk it off. It was good to see a full team effort to get a quality series win over a regional-caliber club like Wright State."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis struck for three runs in the first to take an early 3-0 lead. Will Marcy singled in Jake Curtis who led the game off with a double before Jacob Compton went yard with a two-run shot over the video board in right field.
• Wright State responded with a pair of runs in the third before adding three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to jump out to an 8-3 lead.
• The Tigers roared back for five runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, getting it started with an RBI single from Baskin. Daunte Stuart lined an RBI single back up the middle to score Alex Fernandes before Compton came to the plate and smashed his second big fly of the game, going opposite field for a three-run shot to tie the game at 8-8.
• In the sixth, Memphis caught a break on a throwing error by the Raiders' third baseman that allowed Will Marcy to reach and advance all the way to third while Curtis and Fernandes both crossed home to put the Tigers up 10-8. Stuart grounded into a double play later in the inning but drove in Marcy from third in the process to add another Tiger run.
• The Raiders would not go down easily, as they responded with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth on a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 11-11 before taking the lead in the top of the ninth on another RBI single.
• Trailing 12-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, Brennan DuBose legged out an infield single with one away to set the table for the Tigers. DuBose stole second for his third swipe of the season before scoring on a wild pitch to even things up at 12-12. Curtis came to the plate and ripped a two-out double in the gap to reach base for the sixth time in the game, setting up a walk-off RBI single to center field off the bat of Baskin.
NOTABLES
• Curtis went 3-for-3 and reached base all six times he came to the plate, drawing a pair of walks and reaching on a hit-by-pitch. He slugged a pair of doubles to grow his team-leading total to six all while earning the win for the Tigers on the mound after moving from shortstop to pitch the final frame.
• Baskin went 3-for-5 to log his second three-hit game of the week and now has eight knocks in his past three games. He drove in a pair – including the game winner – and scored a run himself.
• Compton ended the day 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and five RBI, also reaching on a walk. Compton leads the Tigers with five round trippers on the season.
• Marcy recorded a pair of hits, walked and drove in a run to raise his season average to .324.
• Four additional Tigers tallied a hit in the win: Stuart, Pierre Seals, DuBose and Fernandes
• Seth Cox pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit baseball and allowed no runs, striking out two and walking one.
• Left-handed starting pitcher Luke Ellis made his third start of the year and went four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking just one.
• Kylan Stepter pitched the eighth inning and allowed no runs on two hits and struck out a pair.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field Sunday at 1 p.m. for the series finale and a chance to sweep the Raiders.
