Tiger Softball Opens 2024 Season at LSU Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team heads to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to kick off its 2024 season at the LSU Invitational beginning on Friday, Feb. 9. The Tigers will face off against No. 14/No. 15 LSU and Pittsburgh in their two days of action.
Memphis will open its season on Friday on 1:30 p.m. with a familiar foe in Pittsburgh, whom the Tigers hosted last season during the Tiger Classic. Memphis will close out its opening day slate with LSU at 4 p.m. Memphis will then finish its play Saturday with Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. and LSU at 4 p.m.
"I am looking forward to our opening weekend in Baton Rouge," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro shared. "We have been practicing hard the last few weeks and I'm excited to see us on the field competing."
Memphis added 13 newcomers to its roster during the off season and brings back 12 returners. Key newcomers this season include juniors outfielder Aaliyah Dixon, and infielder McKaylee Polk along with freshman pitcher Taniyah Brown.
Dixon, a recipient of the 2023 NJCAA Division II Rawlings Golden Glove Award, has recorded a .331 career batting average with 97 hits, 76 RBI and 20 home runs along with a .967 fielding percentage.
Polk, a NFCA/NJCAA Division II All-American, notched a .434 career batting average with 86 hits, 80 RBI, 23 home runs and a .924 slugging percentage. Brown comes in as a double threat after winning the Alabama 5A State title and being named the 2023 State Tournament MVP. She averaged a 1.69 ERA while recording 794 strikeouts and a .444 batting average with 84 RBI during her high school career.
The Tigers return AAC All-Rookie Team honoree Neely Taylor and Madison Berner, who was named to the AAC Team of the Week on April 3 last season. Berner and Taylor showed a strong presence in the outfield last season with a combined 72 putouts while also contributing at the plate with batting averages over .312.
