Feb 25, 2024 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 20 University of Memphis men's tennis team got back on track Sunday evening with a 6-1 victory against in-state foe Belmont at Leftwich Tennis Center.
Memphis (9-3) cruised to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point convincingly. It started with a 6-3 win from Charlie Barry and Mike Berghaus on court three, before Harry Rock and Conor Gannon took down their opponents 6-4 at the top spot to claim the point.
"Today wasn't easy," Memphis head coach Chris Doerr said. "Belmont is a tough team with a lot of experience. It was also very windy which provided great experience for us.
"I thought Charlie did a fantastic job in doubles; he had great energy from the start. It was also good to get Sam back in the lineup."
The Tigers continued their success in singles. Freshman Maxime Dubouch made his way back into the lineup for the first time since January and swept his opponent 6-3,6-2 on court six.
Pau Fanlo won in straight sets from court three with a 6-1, 7-5 decision, while Gannon moved to the top line for the first time this season and responded with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep to clinch the match for the Tigers.
The Tigers continued to roll with the match in hand. Berghaus battled to victory in straight sets, despite going the distance in a tiebreaker to win 6-3, 7-6(13).
Moritz Kudernatsch finished out the scoring for Memphis on court four, taking a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(6) victory. Belmont got its only point of the match on court two in three sets.
"In singles, it was fantastic to have Maxime healthy and he set the tone for us," Doerr said. "We also had our captain Pau step up and Conor finished off a great weekend with the clinch."
